Emotional day for old boys

Sunday, April 18 2010

The death of Claude Brown overshadowed the latest Hitchin players reunion, which included former Canaries going back to the 1940s.

Players came from far and wide - Bruce Spavins, skipper of the club in two FA Amateur Cup semi-finals, travelled up from Dorset, while Top Field legend Paul Giggle came from deepest Norfolk.

Giggle was among those who arrived at Top Field to learn of Brown's passing. "A lovely man," said Giggle.

Hitchin fans were delighted to see Dennis Chapman back at the ground. Another 1940s stalwart, Wink Saunders, was also present. From the 1950s, David Pacey, Gordon Guile, Brian Smith,

Laurie Scott's fine side was represented by Spavins, Dennis Randall and Tommy Everitt. The team that won the London Senior Cup 40 years ago was partially reassembled - Hughie Pratt, Roy Cutler, Bernie Gogan, John Ashworth and Maurice Howkins. Johnny Brookes, who also skippered the Canaries in that period, came from Wales to attend.

Hitchin stars from the 1970s were there in force - Steve Gear, Howard Kettleborough, Neil Bunker, Dave Archibald and Peter Watson.

More recently, players from the 1980s included Tony Luff, Ian Lindsay and Paul Grant.
