Preview: Cambridge City v Hitchin Town

Friday, September 24 2010

Hitchin travel to Cambridge City for the FA Cup second qualifying round, coming up against former Hitchin striker Gary Roberts.

Mammoth task at Milton Road

Saturday September 25 2010 3pm

Hitchin go into their big cup-tie with Cambridge City very much in the role of underdogs. The home side are unbeaten in the Zamaretto League Premier Division and top the table. Hitchin lost top spot in the Central Division in midweek, but are still unbeaten.

This is a tough one, is it not?
Very difficult and there were one or two groans of disappointment when the draw was made. Firstly, City are in great form and secondly, their wily manager, Gary Roberts, knows all about Hitchin.

How good are Cambridge?
It's fair to say they are better than any opponent Hitchin will face in the league this season. They have a cast iron defence - they have conceded five goals in the league in nine games -  and they have netted 22 goals at the other end. They've won seven of their nine league games. They have not conceded a goal for seven games and only one team has avoided defeat at Milton Road - Salisbury, who drew 3-3 with Roberts' side. In the FA Cup, they beat Long Buckby in the first qualifying round.

Who are the danger men?
Craig Hammond and David Koloydnski are both sharp frontmen - Hitchin fans will recall the latter when he played for Rugby Town. They also have experience in the form of Dave Theobald, Adrian Cambridge, Neil Midgley and Lee Chaffey. There's quality all over the field - Cambridge have the look of league champions.

What news of Hitchin's team?
Hitchin go to Cambridge with a depleted squad. Zak Burke and Liam George are both unavailable and John Frendo is suspended.

There is a bit of an edge to the tie, isn't there?
Indeed there is. Carl Williams has played for Cambridge and Gary Roberts had three spells with the Canaries. But Tom Pepper, Mark Smith and John Frendo have also played for Roberts at Milton Road.

What happened in 2005-06?
In the FA Cup 3QR, Cambridge City beat Darren Salton's side 4-1 after Daniel French gave Hitchin the lead. Chris Booth scored three for the home side and Josh Simpson scored the other goal. In the other meetings in the competition, Hitchin won 3-2 in 1994-95 in the third qualifying round after a 3-3 draw at Top Field. And in 1961-62, Hitchin beat Cambridge City 2-1.

On reaching traffic lights controlling entry to one way system, get into middle lane up beside Staples Office Furniture and follow lane behind Staples where it becomes nearside lane. Stay in this lane until road straightens then take first left. Ground is behind Westbrook Centre.
