Manager's Notes with Mark Burke & Adam Parker

Friday, September 29 2017

MANAGERS’ NOTES WITH ADAM PARKER (Adam was in charge for the Basingstoke game)

We were more attack minded than in recent games and this enabled Callum Donnelly and Jonny McNamara to be released further forward. I was also pleased with our defensive work and Jay Dowie was excellent in the holding role.

Our work rate was much better and followed on from the Bishops Stortford game. Mark and myself wanted us to be more difficult to play against and we certainly achieved that against Basingstoke.

We were also adaptable and I switched to a 4-2-3-1 system from the 4-3-3 we started with when we came under late pressure. All in all it was a good win and another step in the right direction.

MANAGERS’ NOTES WITH MARK BURKE (Mark was back in charge for St Ives)

We made some changes from Saturday to keep the squad fresh. In the first half while we had a lot of possession I thought we lacked our usual tempo and purpose. I was very disappointed with the goal we conceded which meant we went in at half time 1-0 down.

At half time Adam and myself stressed the points that we needed to play at a higher tempo, attack with more purpose and up the work rate. I was pleased the players took this on board and we started the second half very brightly. We fully deserved the equaliser and put St Ives under a lot of pressure.

Unfortunately they got their noses in front again but we showed the character we have displayed in the past to continue to battle away and earn the equaliser and come so close to winning the game which we deserved to do. We have to start somewhere and we are now unbeaten in three games having scored six goals. There is obviously still room for improvement but after our start to the season we need to keep taking small steps.

We travel to Gosport on Saturday with them having picked up their first point at Kings Langley on Tuesday. Both Ian Stratford and Steve Conroy have given me reports from that game and I will be using this information to try and plan an away day victory.

On Monday it is the second instalment of our five game marathon with Bishops Stortford. We beat them in the Herts Charity Cup and now meet them in the league cup. I want to do well in this competition as it is sponsored by Bigfreebet.com and there is good prize money. I will assess the squad after Saturday’s game but will definitely take the game seriously and look to win.
