Weekly Bulletin

Saturday 7 October home to Stratford Town league kick off 3.00pm. This game is pay what you want with a percentage of the takings being donated to the Hitchin homeless hostel.

Tuesday 10 October away to Kings Lynn league kick off 7.45pm. Coach leaves at 3.45pm.

Saturday sees Hitchin Town fully embracing Non-League Day as we welcome Stratford Town to Top Field. It seems a long time ago know that I felt we should get involved in celebrating Non-League Day again this year. Last year we hosted Biggleswade United on Non-League Day and attracted a superb crowd of 708 having made it a pay what you want game and we were able to donate £300 to Prostate Cancer UK. So this year I wanted to be even more ambitious and set the target of trying to attract 1,000 spectators.

A special sub committee was formed to coordinate plans for the day and a number of meetings have taken place to ensure we have left no stone unturned in our bid to attract as many supporters to Top Field as possible. With no Premier League or Championship football and with Luton and Stevenage both having long distance away games we have every chance to entice new supporters to attend our game and therefore to see what non league football can offer.

The Comet have really got behind us to support Non-League Day while Luton Town and Stevenage have kindly encourage their supporters to come to Top Field on Saturday. You can buy a ticket for the game online and this means you could make a donation that will help Stevenage Haven even if you cannot attend the game. You can buy tickets at https://hitchintownfc.ktckts.com/event/hth171801/hitchin-town-v-stratford-town.

Our striking poster for Non League Day which was designed by Stewart Curtis cleverly shows what non league football can offer in contrast to Premier League football. Affordability is one of the main advantages and by making the Stratford game pay what you want we have gone even further to make the game  accessible to all. We also have free entry for under 16’s so hopefully many families will attend.

We are giving away 200 Hitchin Town FC sports bottles to under 16’s on a first come first served basis. These will be available in the club shop and the bottles carry our logo together with the Kick It Out logo. There will also be a face painter at the game.

Having supported a national charity last year we decided to support a local charity this year and we sought the views of local councillors Judi Billing and Ian Albert . With their help we chose Stevenage Haven who provide and run the day to day operational services for the homeless hostel in Nightingale Road. The charity have really got behind our efforts and I must thank Lorna Copland in particular for her input. A bucket collection will be held for Stevenage Haven while they will also receive a percentage of the 50/50 draw which will be drawn by Nick who is a current resident at the homeless shelter. Hopefully we have made people more aware of the work Stevenage Haven do and there will be an article about them in the programme on Saturday. Our community coach Marc Campbell also arranged  basketball and football events last week which highlighted the work he has done with the homeless community helping their integration in to society.

We have probably got details of the Non-League Day fixture out on social media to a greater extent than ever before to spread the message while the poster and banners in the town have really helped the publicity drive. We must also thank our friends at Luton and Stevenage for kindly encouraging their supporters to come to Top Field while the Comet could not have been more supportive.

The Hertfordshire F A have also spread the word and they will be presenting a cheque for £300 to Stevenage Haven at half time. This comes from the profits of the Herts Charity Cup and they allowed us to choose a charity to benefit. Vicki Askew , John Burlison and Paddy Donovan from the Hertfordshire F A  will be at the game on Saturday.

Our youth section are providing mascots for the day and have been urging their players and families to attend.

So I would like to thank Kate Deller, Mick Docking, Stewart Curtis, Beatrice Thirkettle, Marc Campbell, Colin Ridgway, Paul Males and Len Leroux for their help in organising Non-League Day together with Lorna Copland (Stevenage Haven), Nick Gill and Layth Yousif (The Comet), Vicki Askew (Hertfordshire F A), Stuart Hammonds (Luton Town FC), Bob Makin (Stevenage FC) and David Lynam (Kaizen Ticketing Solutions Ltd). All we need now is good weather and fingers crossed we can reach our target of 1,000 supporters.

At Top Field this Sunday 8 October Hitchin Town FC Vets meet Berkhampsted Raiders Vets with a 2.00pm kick off. This game is in the Herts Veterans Cup. The Hitchin squad is due to include the following ex Canaries - Ian Scott, Steve Conroy, Adam Parker, Carl Williams, Darren Bonfield, Bill Baldry, Ian Lindsay and Liam George amongst others. There will be free entry so why not come along and see these past heroes perform. Due to a bad back Mark Burke is unable to play but he will manage the team.

We have been drawn away to Kings Langley in the second round and the game will be played on Tuesday 14 November kick off 7.45pm.This means the home league game with Slough will have to be rearranged.

Last night (Thursday) our under 18’s travelled to Saffron Walden in the F A Youth Cup. They won the game 3-2 against a very good side. It was 0-0 at half time but we went 2-0 up before being pegged back. The winner came in the 87th minute.

In the third qualifying round Hitchin will be at home to Hoddesdon and this will probably be on Thursday 19 October.

Jay Dowie is serving a one game suspension for accumulating five bookings and misses the Stratford game.

Callum Donnelly sustained an ankle injury at Gosport and will miss the next few games.

Liam Brooks is back and will play along with Toby Syme at Stotfold on Saturday. This has been made possible because Michael Parkin and Darren Mitchell have taken charge at Stotfold. We would like to wish both of them the best of luck and thank them for their services this season, although we are sure that our relationship will continue and this will mean we can forge even closer links with Stotfold.
