Manager's Notes with Mark Burke

Friday, October 6 2017

On Saturday we faced a Gosport team that had endured a difficult start to the season but had picked up their first point at Kings Langley on the previous Tuesday. We had to contend with the fact that a new manager had been appointed and this invariably gives struggling teams a boost. However we made the perfect start with an early goal but then I was disappointed that we gave the initiative to Gosport for the rest of the half and looked anxious.

At half time we told the players to relax and to try and play the football we are used to playing and I was pleased that they responded so well to these instructions. Once we scored the second goal we took control of the game and Gosport looked defeated. We then scored a late third goal to put a gloss on the scoreline.

This fixture gave me the opportunity to start players who were in need of game time but I did not make wholesale changes as I have learnt from past experience that this can be too disruptive. it was a case of getting the balance right between playing players who have not been starting games while keeping the momentum of our unbeaten run.

The initial stages saw Bishops Stortford on top and it took our team time to settle down and gel. But after we equalised we found our rhythm and I thought the second half was very entertaining with some good goals. In our 5 game unbeaten run we have scored 13 goals which is very encouraging as we had only scored 7 goals in the previous 9 games. I am still concerned that we are conceding too many goals but progress is being made.

I am really looking forward to the Non-League Day game against Stratford and I applaud the club for supporting Stevenage Haven at this game. I am very proud of the community work Hitchin Town get involved with and It is fitting we are supporting a charity working with the homeless as our community coach Marc Campbell has done such great work with the homeless community. It would be brilliant to see Top Field packed to the rafters and I really hope we can hit that 1,000 spectators target.

The game will not be easy as Stratford are a good side who have been a little unlucky of late. It will be interesting to see what affect their epic midweek F A Cup replay will have had on the Stratford team but we will need to perform to get a result.

Manager Ian Culverhouse has settled in to his role and we will be facing a completely different team from the one we played in his first match in charge. In Michael Gash they have an experienced and clinical goal scorer and he will be one player we need to watch.

Kings Lynn have started the season well and are certainly in contention for a play off place.
