Weekly Bulletin & Manager's Notes

Friday, November 17 2017

Saturday 18 November away to Hereford league kick off 3.00pm. Coach leaves at 9.00am.
There is no midweek fixture.

There have been a couple of changes to the fixtures. We now travel to Frome on Saturday 25 November kick off 3.00pm. As both sides are out of the F A Trophy it was decided to bring forward the league game from Saturday 23 December.

We will now play the home league game with Chesham on Monday 15 January kick off 7.45pm instead of Saturday 25 November as Chesham are playing in the F A Trophy that day.

On Sunday 19 November the Ladies are at home to Welwyn Pegasus Sapphires Ladies at Swinburne Avenue kick off 2.00pm.

The academy side are at home to Kings Langley on Wednesday 22 November at the Arena kick off 1.30pm. They did not have a game this week.

If we beat Bishops Stortford we will be at home to the winners of the Boreham Wood versus Stevenage tie in the quarter final. I apologise for incorrectly saying we would be away last week due to a problem with the Herts F A website. In the semi final the winners of our quarter final will be at home to Ware, Welwyn Garden City , Kings Langley or Watford.

Again I gave incorrect information last week. Hitchin Vets will be at home to Tansley or Letchworth Vets in the quarter final.

Dan Webb trained on Monday and should return for the Hereford game.
Jack Green and Trey Charles both faces† fitness tests to see if they can play at Hereford.
Toby Syme will not be fit for the Hereford game .

Many Canary fans will remember Neil Jensen's first book on life at Top Field called "The Men from Fishponds Road". Finally, he has found time to fill in the gaps and produce the definitive book on Hitchin Town FC covering its reformation in 1928 up to the present day.

Additionally, Neil's book contains fascinating facts about the origins of the Club's predecessor Hitchin FC, set up at the time that all players were gentlemen and were as likely to pick up the ball and run with it, as restrict themselves to kicking the ball between two uprights with no crossbar.

Tales of the Town
Containing many photographs never previously made public this book is bound to stimulate the sportsmen and women of North Herts and non-league football in general to recall memories of the flat caps and rattles days of the fifties. When there was no sport on TV because TV had not been invented and Saturday afternoon was about going to watch your local side for threepence entry fee and a one penny programme.

The massive amount of time that Neil has spent researching and writing this book, he has done at no cost to the club and in his words "represents my donation to the club's 150 years project". The club is very lucky to have Neil's skills to call upon and very grateful indeed for his expertise and experience in these matters.

This is a limited edition and we expect to sell out quickly - so if you wish to buy for yourself or friends and relatives we recommend that you do so without delay. The book will shortly be available on line through the Hitchin Town FC site as well as at home games. All that history and all those memories for just £14.95 plus P & P.

Arrangements for a book signing session by the author are in hand and further announcements will be made soon.

Our visit to Hereford on Saturday does not just bring back memories of our famous F A Cup meetings in 1994. It also reminds me how Hitchin Town played a small part in the re-emergence of Hereford after the original club's sad demise. On 25 April 2015 Hitchin played a Hereford Supporters team managed by the Hereford legend Ricky George. The game took place on the date the original league game was due to be played. It was a pay what you want game and we made a donation to the Hereford Supporters Trust. The rest is history as the new Hereford have begun the climb back to Football League status but I am proud that we played a small part in their return.

This week I interviewed Brett Donnelly and the subsequent article will be on the website shortly.

The early omens were not good as we suffered a body blow losing Dan Webb to an injury and Trey Charles was also missing. Also certain players were not 100% fit particularly Michael Johnson who was suffering from tonsillitis.

I thought the first half was very close with very little between the teams. I felt Jack Green should have had a penalty and it added insult to injury when he was booked for simulation. The goal we conceded before half time was poor defensively.

In the second half we got back in to the game and deservedly drew level but we made further defensive errors to concede a second goal. Then Chesham showed good game management to see the game through and I have to give them credit. They are now unbeaten for 10 games and in Joe Iaciofano† they had a very dangerous striker. They were at full strength and a difficult proposition but I still feel we can do better in the league game.

Obviously the return to Hereford will bring back some great memories of our 1994-5 F A cup meetings. I was very proud to be captain of that team and those two meetings with Hereford will always live in my memory. If we can emulate those performances on Saturday it would be great. With their massive following it will be a great experience for our young side. We always like to go in to a game as underdogs and I hope the special atmosphere will lift the players.
