Weekly Bulletin & Manager's Notes, 02 February

Friday, February 2 2018

Saturday 3 February  away to Redditch United  League kick off 3.00pm. Coach leaves 10.30am.

Monday 5 February  home to Kempston Rovers  BigFreeBet Cup kick off 7.45pm

Report by Callum Ellis of last Sunday's win---

With the sun beaming through the clouds nothing was stopping the game from going ahead today! Mole hills flattened and holes filled it was time to kick off against Royston Town Ladies Development.

The game was off and within seconds of the kick off McNamara & Franklin saw their efforts go just wide of the goal. Great start from the ladies! The first goal came from McNamara who was played through by Evans before slotting past the keeper.

Royston had a couple of chances but they nestled into Thompson's arms. Hitchin responded well to Royston's attack and the next chance fell to McNamara from Huffer's long ball but it glanced wide. Just after the half hour mark Royston drilled in a free kick from 25 yards. Hitchin had a slight moment where the ball didn't leave their half. With Royston doubling their lead shortly after a storm was brewing.

Hitchin started to knock the ball around the field and won a free kick from 30 yards out. None other than team captain Chaffey made sure her strike found the top corner to bring the game level. ALL TO PLAY FOR!

The whistle blew for half time and the girls started to pump themselves up for the next half which certainly was going to be entertaining.

The second half got underway and just as we started the game, the chance to increase our lead fell to McNamara who was being closed down too quickly and saw her toe poke roll past the post. A quick cross into the box found Friel for the tap in. Efforts from Chaffey & McNamara were  saved by the keeper while Thompson  made a fine one handed save.

In the dying moments of the game Royston were running out of ideas and were being run round by Hitchin. Hitchin's defence held strong and shut down any attack from Royston.

The final chance of the game came from Franklin. McNamara switched the play to Franklin whose shot went over the keeper and finished the game off.

The ladies worked hard, a disciplined and structured Hitchin took three points and now jump to third in the division. This takes them three points behind league leaders Garston.

Next game is Sunday 4th February 2018 against Royston at Barkway Recreational Ground, Cambridge Road, Barkway, Royston, Herts, SG8 8BS, 14:00 kick off.

The academy team beat Brentford Griffins 5-0 on Wednesday. Next Wednesday they are at home to Staines at the Arena kick off 1.30pm.

Many thanks to Andy Denniss who managed to secure £300 from the Aviva Community Fund. This will be donated to the Ability Counts team

Jay Dowie has to have a scan. He may have a tear of his meniscus and if this is confirmed he would need an operation and could be out for the season.

Elliot Bailey faces a fitness test ahead of the Redditch game.

The squad that played at Hitchin on Monday contained 14 of the 16 players who won  3-0 at Ebbsfleet in the National League on Saturday.

Before the game I knew we were in for a testing afternoon as Kings Lynn were having a great season and since our last meeting at Top Field had strengthened their team with players from the Football League

I was very impressed with the way Kings Lynn played with a 3-4-2-1 formation. All of their players turned in an 8 out of 10 performance and it was one of the most impressive displays I have seen from an opposition team at Top Field since I took over. They obviously took that confidence in to their top of the table clash with Hereford on Tuesday where they came from behind to win 3-2.

To the match itself and I thought we competed well in the early stages but we switched off at a vital time to concede the first goal while the second goal came at a critical time right on half time. Their confidence was enhanced while ours was deflated. An early goal in the second half put the game to bed but one positive was that we never gave up and fought to the end.

On Monday we relinquished our hold on the County Cup losing to a very strong Boreham Wood side. I am sure manager Luke Garrord wanted revenge for the defeat we inflicted on them two years ago in the final.

We changed our shape and personnel and I thought we acquitted ourselves very well. We matched up with their 3-5-2 formation and despite conceding an early goal I thought we showed great character to put Boreham Wood under pressure for the remainder of the half. Unfortunately we conceded another goal soon after half time which put Boreham Wood in the ascendancy and they were able to see out the game.

We will be looking to build on Monday's performance as we look for our first goals and points of the year at Redditch on Saturday. It is important we do perform well as it will give us confidence for Monday's League Cup quarter final

The Kempston tie will be keenly contested and our previous meetings have been close affairs despite them being friendlies. This is an important fixture that we need to win to give our supporters something to look forward to along with the Herts Charity Cup final.
