Weekly Bulletin & Manager's Notes, 09 February

Friday, February 9 2018

Saturday 10 February  home to Farnborough  league  kick off 3.00pm.

Monday 12 February  home to Chesham  league  kick off 7.45pm.

The draw for the semi-finals will be made tonight, Friday 09/02/18, at 7.00pm.

Report by Callum Ellis

It was time for the reverse fixture, Royston Town Development v Hitchin Town Ladies FC.

We started on the back foot to begin with and Royston took an early lead. Hitchin responded well but couldn't get the equaliser. Royston doubled the score within 30 minutes from the kick off. The only action we saw was people trying to run on a seriously cut up soggy pitch.

The second half kicked off and  Royston added a third. With some constructive advice and some tactical changes (Ladies ideas) things started to pick up! Hitchin pulled one back through McNamara.

Hitchin added a second when Chaffey got the assist and Cain was there to fire over the keeper and into the goal. Hitchin dominated the final closing minutes of the game but a quick Royston counter attack was turned in off the back heel of a Hitchin defender.

No matter what the score was the Ladies did everything they could to bring at least a point home. It wasn't our day but they all came off laughing and smiling and proud with their performance.

We restart against league leaders Garston at the Bushey Met Club, Aldenham Road, Bushey. 2:00pm  kick off this Sunday.

The academy side lost 3-2 at home to Staines on Wednesday. Next Wednesday there is no game because of half term.

Hitchin Town FC will play a celebration match away to Letchworth Garden City Eagles on Thursday 22 February, kicking off at 7.30pm.

The purpose of the game is twofold. It is to celebrate a new milestone in the club's development following the installation of floodlights around the senior pitch, but perhaps more importantly to create  an annual celebration of the football life of Vince Paige, one of the club co-founders who died early last year.

Vince was not only a former chairman of the Eagles junior club, and latterly its Child Welfare Officer, but a well known figure in the local community. A former social worker he saw football as as an opportunity to improve the lives of disadvantaged children and teenagers, and in later years he was a volunteer at Brandles Special school in Baldock.
This trophy is a mark of respect for Vince and an effort to secure his enduring memory in  local football.

Neil Jensen's book is continuing to sell very well. You can buy a copy at tomorrow's home game from the supporters club shop or online at https://hitchintownfc.ktckts.com/merchandise/ht1718mtt/tales-of-the-town.

Jay Dowie will not play again this season after a tear in his meniscus was confirmed.

Elliot Bailey is still struggling with injury and unlikely to be fit for tomorrow.

Trey Charles faces a fitness test tomorrow.

We went to Redditch looking for our first goals and points of the season but unfortunately we did not get off to the best of starts conceding an early goal. It was not until the final fifteen minutes of the first half that we grew in to the game and got accustomed to the surface. We gained the initiative and took this in to the start of the second half.

We got a deserved equaliser by means of a penalty and were on the front foot. Our cause was helped by the dismissal of their young full back but we failed to press home this advantage and slack marking saw us concede again.

We then dominated the last fifteen minutes, got our equaliser and nearly scored a winner at the death but we also nearly conceded another goal. On the balance of play a draw was a fair resultand I was happy to break our duck with goals and a point.

On a freezing night when the pitch got harder and bumpier as it began to freeze free flowing football was impossible. One bit of quality football in the first half led to our first goal and we led by this goal at the intrerval.

A combination of our anxiety and an attitude of boom or bust from Kempston resulted in us coming under pressure in the second half. Fortunately our anxiety did not get the better of us and we were able to secure victory with a second goal.

Despite this not being a football spectacle it was very important we scored, kept a clean sheet and won. I am hopeful this will be a building block for improved performances for the rest of the season.

I would like to thank the 105 brave souls who witnessed our first win of 2018 and I thank them for their loyalty.

We face a Farnborough team that is very different from the one we met in October. This will be a difficult match as they will be buoyed by their performance against Hereford last week. However we need to build on our result from Monday and look to get back in to the top ten in the league.

Chesham are fresh from winning the January team of the month award after a fine run of victories and as ever with Chesham I expect a close fought match on Monday. It would be nice to get revenge for our F A Trophy defeat at Chesham.
