Brett's Blog

Thursday, February 22 2018

I have been really pleased to see the reaction to Brett's weekly blog and felt I should give some background to how and why it started. I have always wanted the Hitchin Town website to be as informative for our supporters as possible. Many other clubs never seem to have any news or opinions on their websites and I was determined this would not be the case at Hitchin. This was why I originally started the weekly bulletin as at that time not much seemed to be happening on our website and I thought it was important we told supporters what was going on at Top Field. I also asked manager Mark Burke if he would do a weekly column in which he would give an honest appraisal of team performances. He consented and I am sure you will agree that he never shies away from telling it like it really is and is always prepared to be critical if necessary as well as praising the good performances. I think this gives supporters a real insight and few clubs offer a similar service.

So we now had a news bulletin and a weekly set of manager's notes but something was still missing as there was no regular input from a player. Interviews I did with Dan Webb and Brett Donnelly seemed to be well received so I thought it would be a good idea to have a weekly column from a player to give supporters an even better insight in to what goes on at the club. I chose to ask Brett for a number of reasons. Firstly he is a character and has been around for a long time. He is old school but part of a young squad. He is outspoken, provocative and will not hide away. He has a great sense of humour and I just knew his columns would be entertaining, funny and required reading for all Hitchin followers. The initial reaction would suggest my gut feeling has been proved correct.

With Brett he will make comments that not everyone will agree with but as he has said to me on many occasions he would never write anything about a player that he would not say to his face. You must also appreciate Brett's sense of humour which some critics have failed to understand. He can be very tongue in cheek which was very much the case with his comments on goalkeepers last week. I have called his blog a view from inside the dressing room  and that is what you are getting. Football dressing rooms are unique places and supporters would find it a real opener to observe what goes on in this peculiar  environment. Some of the banter is really bizarre, players are given crazy nicknames and it really is a different world. Brett is giving supporters an insight in to this inner sanctum of the football club and again few clubs can offer this. Mark and myself check Brett's musings to ensure we are happy no offence is caused.  The comments by Brett on Michael Johnson last week we both felt showed how highly Brett rates MJ.

I am really proud that Hitchin Town are now offering weekly columns for news, manager's notes and a player blog. I  hope supporters are appreciative of this as it all takes a lot of time and there have been many occasions when Mark has not really wanted to go over bad performances but he has never missed his column other than through holiday. Likewise Brett spends a lot of time on his blog so I thank both Mark and Brett for giving up their time for the benefit of the supporters.

Roy Izzard

Now on to Brett's latest blog and you will read his views on the Gosport and Hayes games while he confirms his relationship with Michael Johnson is fine. Over to you Brett---

So last week's blog seemed to have upset a few people and I will draw a line under it all now. I stand by what I wrote and if you don't agree with me on certain issues then that's life and that is most definitely football. I don't like onions, boys playing netball and Watford Football Club so if you are  an onion eating male who plays netball and supports Watford Football Club we will not get on!! I have no vendettas against any player and I merely give my views on what I see. For those worried that I may have affected my relationship with Muj (Michael Johnson) therefore upsetting team morale, let me assure you there is no problem and it is fine. In fact myself, Muj and Macca ( Jonny McNamara) were the last in the bar Saturday night. Muj took most of my money...  so the last laugh is on him!!

Anyway  on to upsetting someone else this week!!!

Saturday's game was against rock bottom Gosport-- a no win situation. If we win 9-0, then we were supposed to stuff them as they are bottom of the league. If we draw, that's not acceptable and if we lose... I dread to think! Thankfully we started really well and went one up early but then we conceded a silly equaliser again. Gosport put up much more of a fight then they did at their place. It is never easy playing a team bottom of the league as they have nothing to lose.  Gosport fought to hold onto what they had, but I thought we edged the match without absolutely bossing it. I came on and should have done better with a back heel. Why am I back heeling??!!! Just head it! Anyway Lucas, who for me along with Burnsy was man of the match, got down the wing, put a lovely ball in and I got the faintest of touches to knock it in. However I wasn't credited with it! Video is inconclusive.. so as Lucas needed a goal from open play I didn't put up too much of a fuss. We were winning and that was the main thing. But we seem to be getting in a bad habit of sitting back and Gosport had a right go. With the last kick of the game they should have equalised. Thankfully they didn't!!!! A first league win this year. and that set us up for Monday's semi-final.

The league cup if I am honest gets right in the way at the start of the season. For me it is behind the Herts Senior Cup in importance. However once we beat Rushden there was a sense of a willingness to win it. Hayes and Yeading came to us in some form and we knew we were in for a game. The first 5 minutes were nip & tuck but the next 40 I thought we battered them. Poor finishing (ME) and an inability to beat the first man in 96% of our crosses (Macca,Lucas,Belly (Ben Walster) etc) meant it was 0-0 at half-time. It was a matter of time until we scored. Once again we came out for the second half ready to get that goal.. and found ourselves 1-0 down inside 10 minutes!! Let us do it the hard way then fellas! We plugged away and got a deserved equaliser. Now then this goal-it was  given to Connor Vincent... hahahahahaha no chance. We all know he was not hitting the target from there! He's flicked it towards goal and I have kicked it in the goal but then Webby may have got the final touch. Either way it was 1-1. It was always going to go to penalties.

We are decent at pens. You always fancy Muj to save one and the penalty takers are all competent, except Burnsy but even he scored! Their number 10 took the worst penalty I have ever seen with a slow stuttering run up then hitting it  straight at Muj. They then had their fifth penalty saved by Muj and we were in another cup final!! Our goalkeeper got us there. typical after the stick I got from the goalkeepers union this week! Well done Muj. (that's the height of praise you are getting).

So we have 2 finals to look forward to and hopefully a top ten finish. What a terrible season!! As Chris Newbold said to me after the game "if you'd have said to me 2 finals and safe from relegation by mid February at the start of the century I'd have bitten your hand off". We've come a long way, expectations are higher now than ever. Let us hope we can win both cups.

Lastly Roy has asked me to put some notes together for my take on referees. As you might guess I have some pretty strong views. However I'll save that for next week.
