Weekly Bulletin, 23 February

Friday, February 23 2018

Saturday 24 February away to Basingstoke league kick off 3.00pm. Coach leaves at 10.30am.

Tuesday 27 February away to Stratford league kick off 7.45pm. Coach leaves at 3.45pm.

On Thursday night Hitchin won the Vince Paige Cup after winning 3-1 on penalties after the game was drawn 1-1. Letchworth took the lead with a penalty after 9 minutes and on a difficult playing surface Hitchin were not at their best. Chances were missed up to half time but as the game went on Hitchin became more dominant. Jonny McNamara equalised following a good move in the 87th minute. This was after Hitchin had three goals ruled out for offside and hit the woodwork.

Academy keeper Josh Mollison was the hero of the penalty shoot-out saving three penalties. Lewis Rolfe, McNamara and Ben Walster scored for Hitchin with Elliot Bailey and Daniel Olaniran missing.

The evening celebrated the life of Vince Paige and saw the new Letchworth floodlights officially opened and was well attended by Letchworth supporters. It was good to see Carl Williams playing for Letchworth and still looking really fit.

From a Hitchin viewpoint it was not a memorable performance but vital match time was given to players who needed it.

Team - Johnson (Mollison 46), Syme, Walster, Cotter (Smith 46), Webb (Rolfe 46), Byrne, Kirkpatrick (Barnes 60), McNamara, Donnelly (Bailey 75), Logan (Olaniran 46), Charles

The academy team beat London Tigers 3-2 on Wednesday. They are at home to Wealdstone on Friday 23 February kick off 1.30pm at the Arena and on Wednesday 28 February are away to Metropolitan Police kick off 2.00pm.

This is Callum Ellis' report of the 3-2 win over Hitchin Belles last Sunday:

"We returned to League action against local opposition in Hitchin Belles. We lost 2-0 against them at the start of the campaign so what did today have in store.

Finally we had a decent pitch to play on at St Christophers School, the home of the Belles. Both teams started the game well with chances falling to Belles but Thompson was on hand to tidy up in the goal mouth.

Our first Chance came from McNamara after Franklin slotted the ball through the defence but the Belles keeper was on hand to gather. Half time score was 0-0.

The second half got under way and a shot from outside the box sent the Belles one up. Hitchin responded well and McNamara's shot hit the inside of the post to fall to Chaffey's feet for the tap in. GAME ON

Franklin placed the ball through to McNamara who rounded the keeper and tapped into an empty net. 2-1 to Hitchin and it doesn't look like it will stop.

The Belles started to push on and created chances which were just wide of the post. Hitchin won a corner and it was sent in and cleared by the Belles only for Franklin to send the ball back into the box where Friel hit a sweet shot on the volley to make it 3-1. Belles grabbed a second in the dying minutes of the game but Hitchin walked away with the 3 points.

It was a great game with fantastic character from both teams as both wanted three points. This game really showcased Ladies football.

We go up against AFC Bedford Development in the Quarter Finals of the Chris Renshaw Cup on Sunday at Swinburne Avenue, Hitchin 1.30 kick off."

Once again many thanks to our helpers who ensured that Monday's game with Hayes and Yeading went ahead. The pitch played really well after further rain. Indeed the referee who did the pitch inspection was very impressed by how good the pitch was. He refereed the Herts Senior Cup game against Boreham Wood and thought the pitch was better on Monday.

Please support the Quiz Night at Ickleford Cricket Club on Friday 23 February. It starts at 7.30pm and entrance is 5 per head and teams can have a maximum six members. All profits go to the Top Field regeneration fund. Please contact Mick Docking on 07954 376132 for further details.

The home league game with Slough has been moved to Monday 16 April kick off 7.45pm.
The date for the Herts Charity Cup final with Hemel Hempstead will be Tuesday 10 April at Bishops Stortford kick off 7.45pm.

We will play Didcot Town or Larkhall Athletic in the final of the League Cup. The Southern League have not yet decided if it will be over one or two legs (last season it was a one leg final).

Josh Bickerstaff is struggling to be fit for the Basingstoke game.
Elliott Bailey played the last 15 minutes at Letchworth on Thursday.
Daniel Olaniran has signed having secured international clearance. His previous club was Peachtree City Moba in America. He is a defender.
Congratulations to Kieran Barnes who scored a hat-trick for Stotfold last Saturday.
