Daventry Town 1 Hitchin Town 1

Tuesday, September 14 2010

John Frendo opened his account for Hitchin with a 91st minute equaliser at Daventry Town, thus preserving the Canaries' unbeaten start to the Zamaretto League season. Once more, Hitchin had to come from behind.

Frendo the foe for Daventry
A goal in added time by new signing John Frendo saved Hitchin's unbeaten league record at Daventry's Communications Park.

The Canaries had a tough 90 minutes against a Daventry side that was strong, determined and far better than their league position suggested.

Although Hitchin had the better of the first 20 minutes, they failed to test Daventry goalkeeper Andy Kemp. By  the time the first period was over, Daventry had got on top with Andrew Gregory and Rob Foster both going close.

It was much the same after the interval, but in the 52nd minute, Russell Dunkley put the home side ahead from close range.

Frendo came on after 56 minutes and the former Ware striker had two shots wide of the target. Callum Donnelly also went close with two efforts.

Hitchin found it hard, however, to break through a resolute Daventry defence with Jason Lee and Aaron Parkinson especially difficult to get past.

But Daventry also had their chances to score and Martin Bennett did well to stop a Foster shot from six yards.

Tom Mustapha added some energy to the Hitchin attack when he came on as substitute for Jamie Arlick with 15 minutes remaining. He had two headers that threatened the Daventry goal.

It looked as though Hitchin were heading for their first away defeat since the beginning of March, but Frendo showed why he was such an in-demand player when he turned and shot past Kemp in stoppage time.

Frendo was in the thick of it again before the final whistle, going down in the area to the soundtrack of fans baying for a penalty. The referee didn't buy it, but given the uneasy 90 minutes for Carl Williams and his team, this may go down as a good point as the season progresses.
