Hitchin Town 1 Banbury United 2

Saturday, November 17 2012

It’s still too early to call this game at six-pointer, but it was certainly a basement clash and Banbury, who sat below Hitchin before the start of play, deserved to emerge on top.

Panic stations are a little premature, but there was definitely an air of pessimism around Top Field after Hitchin’s sixth defeat in eight league games. And this Hitchin side was unrecognizable from the one that gained a credible draw at AFC Totton in midweek.

There were early hints that Banbury’s pace and tenacity might cause problems from Hitchin’s defence., notably when Talabi Adeyinka blasted over the bar after bursting through the defence.

Hitchin created a handful of chances in the first half,  the nippy Stewart King shooting over the bar and also going close with a header from Josh Bickerstaff’s cross.

But it was Banbury that took the lead in the 39th minute, Wayne Blossom converting a free header after a corner.  A minute later, Blossom – scarcely the tallest man on the pitch – had another header that went inches wide.

Hitchin staged a mini-revival at the start of the second period, with Callum Donnelly’s cross fumbled by Banbury keeper Dean Coleman and Zak Burke cutting insider and shooting wide. There was another chance for Frendo when Marc Leach’s header fell invitingly in the area, but the Canaries star striker just failed to connect.

Banbury’s Albi Skedi, who proved to be handful all afternoon, and Kyman Isaac wwre both denied by Martin Bennett were both denied in the space of 30 seconds as the visitors went in search of a killer second goal.

Out of the blue, though, Hitchin equalized, when a through ball was missed by Dean Coleman and Frendo followed the ball into the net.

Hitchin were not level for long, however, for a cross-area pass by Isaac found Adeyinka and he was unmarked and ready to slide the ball into the net.

This was not a game that Hitchin wanted to slip-up on, but they did exactly that  - they have time to get it right, but the remedy needs to be implemented soon, though, to avoid this slump becoming an outright depression.
