Hitchin Town 2 Bedford Town 0

Saturday, December 8 2012

It may not have been a classic, but this was a game that saw a determined Hitchin side win in the league against Bedford at Top Field for the first time in almost a decade.

Few will be surprised to learn that the matchwinner was John Frendo, the real difference between Hitchin and an injury-hit Bedford side.

After a quiet start, Hitchin had the first chances to score, with Zak Burke shooting into the side-netting after a ran onto a long ball from Luke Gregson. Then Frendo linked up with new signing Jonathan Constant, who scuffed his shot inside the area.

Hitchin took the lead after 18 minutes. Gregson’s header was saved at the foot of the post by Bedford keeper Ian Brown but the ball was played back into the area by Constant and Frendo shot home.

But Bedford should have levelled the scores four minutes later when Jermaine Ivy skipped past Liam McGovern and sent his effort wide of Martin Bennett’s goal.

Burke went close again for the Canaries when he cut inside and saw his low shot tipped past the post by Brown. In the 32nd minute, Hitchin thought they had extended their lead when Lawrie Stewart bundled the ball home at the far post, injuring Brown in the process. The goal was ruled out and Brown had to go off with a hand injury. Striker Nick Beasant took over in goal and didn’t do a bad job at all, pulling off an early save from Jack Beckett.

Bedford had their best spell at the start of the second half with Mike Built hitting the side-netting, but seconds later, in the 52nd minute, Frendo scored again when he received the ball just inside the area and netted with a snap-shot that went into the top corner of the net.

Bedford were a beaten side now and Hitchin could have made the scoreline look a lot more impressive. Substitutes Ollie Taylor and Daniel Delderfield as well as Frendo, all had chances to score, mostly on the break. A more confident side might have taken advantage of weakened opponents. Taylor, in particular could have got on the scoresheet on more than one occasion.

So Hitchin gained only their third win of the season at Top Field. Confidence has been low in recent weeks – this victory should help in that direction. There are tougher opponents ahead, though.
