Chippenham Town 2 Hitchin Town 4

Saturday, September 1 2012

Just in case anyone needed reminding, John Frendo makes a big difference to Hitchin Town’s team.

The talismanic striker returned from his four-match suspension to help the Canaries record an impressive win at Chippenham, scoring once and creating another.

Hitchin scored four times in 20 minutes to storm into a 4-1 half-time lead – despite going a goal down in the second minute. Lawrie Stewart handled in the area and Alan Griffin, who always gives Hitchin a game when he plays against them, scored from the penalty spot.

Hitchin came back well, though and Daniel Delderfield netted the equalizer on nine minutes, taking his chance well after being set-up by Callum Donnelly. Griffin, who later went off injured, almost restored Chippenham’s lead when he struck the woodwork within seconds of the goal.

On 18 minutes, however, Hitchin took the lead through Frendo, who – typically -  created the goal out of nothing. Four minutes later, Frendo nodded the ball on to Luke Gregson, who ran through and chipped home keeper Josh Dempsey.

Good approach work by Delderfield created another chance for Hitchin in the 28th minute, Donnelly seeing his effort strike the post and roll into the net.

Shell-shocked Chippenham tried to get back into the game in the second half and in the 46th minute, substitute Lee Phillips scored from close range after striking the woodwork.

For a while, Hitchin were all at sea, but  a frenetic opening 15 minutes calmed and control shifted back to Carl Williams’ side.

Hitchin thought they should have had a penalty in the 65th minute when Frendo was brought down, but all please were ignored.

Martin Bennett pulled off a good save from a Luke Ballinger free kick and in the closing stages, one-time danger man David Gilroy went close with a header that cleared the crossbar, but apart from that, Hitchin were comfortable.

Victory at Hardenhuish will reassure Hitchin fans after two goalless defeats against Leamington and Arlesey. Frendo was the key and Williams will be hoping that their star man is not sidelined again through his penchant for card collection!
