St.Albans City 1 Hitchin Town 1

Saturday, January 12 2013

Work in progress it may be, but the new broom trying to sweep clean got off to a good start at Clarence Park.

In fact, Hitchin could have come away with their fourth win at St.Albans in five visits. For a team that is in the process of reconstruction, and could easily have been excused for being a group of strangers, the Canaries did very well indeed.

New faces included Jon North, Michael Noone, Jhai Dillon and Jake Woolley. All played their part in a credible and much-needed draw. And on the evidence of this display, the longer they can keep Woolley on loan from Luton, the better it will be for Hitchin Town.

Woolley scored Hitchin’s goal, struck the woodwork and ran, twisted and turned all afternoon. And in midfield, Noone gave the impression that he can be a fixture in the Canaries’ line-up.

Woolley hit the bar in the 15th minute in a period dominated by Hitchin. John Frendo and Jack Beckett also had chances in the first 20 minutes. Although St.Albans caused some panic when a cross was spilled by North, the new keeper was rarely called to serious action in the first half.

On the stroke of half-time, Hitchin almost went ahead when Nick Jupp pulled off an excellent double-save from Frendo.

Hitchin continued to have the better of things in the opening stage of the second half and in the 56th minute, Woolley finished off a move that saw Beckett find Frendo and his shot bounce out to the on-loan striker who finished in style.

As the half progressed, though, Hitchin seemed to tire and the home side began to take control. In the 75th minute, they had a goal disallowed, but eight minutes later, Chris Henry sent the ball into the bottom corner of the net with an angled drive, with the Hitchin defence standing off.

Given the amount of pressure being exerted by St.Albans, it was no surprise, but Hitchin almost scored in added time when Noone’s high ball nearly caught Jupp out. A point it was, however, and it provides a good platform on which to build Hitchin’s recovery programme.
