Hitchin Town 2 St.Neots Town 0

Monday, October 15 2012

Amid an evening of low expectation, Hitchin produced one of their best displays of the season to beat ambitious St.Neots in this Red Insure Cup tie.

As well as some sparkling football, the game was notable because the Canaries played for 78 minutes with 10 men.

A number of players also created a selection headache for manager Carl Williams, with Daniel Delderfield, Liam McGovern, Marc Leach and Daniel Webb all putting in useful performances. And following his debut against Frome, Callum Stewart demonstrated that he is a very good signing for Hitchin.

Hitchin could have taken the lead early on in this game when McGovern created a chance for John Frendo, whose tame header was saved by Michael Duggan.

In the 18th minute, Hitchin received a setback when Josh Bickerstaff brought down Lewis Hilliard and was awarded a red card. But this didn’t seem to deter the Canaries, who started to play some good, fluid football. Two minutes later, the St.Neots defence failed to cut out a through ball and Daniel Delderfield ran on, almost too wide, before sending a low shot in off the post.

Delderfield, who seems to enjoy playing against St.Neots – two goals in the league meeting in August – almost added another to his tally when he tried to chip Duggan. St.Neots came back, though and McGovern cleared off the line from Ben Mackey and the same player went close when his low drive was saved by Martin Bennett.

Delderfield was denied by an acrobatic Duggan at the start of the second half, but the game was as good as won in the 57th minute when Hitchin scored again, Frendo lobbing the St.Neots keeper from 30 yards. It was from this point, however, that the visitors had their best spell. Bennett pulled off a superb double save from Mackey and former Hitchin defender Ollie Thorne went close with a long range shot.

Hitchin should have scored again in the 71st minute when Callum Donnelly ran from the halfway line and saw his shot saved by Duggan.

So the Canaries won through to the next round of the Red Insure Cup where doubtless another local derby awaits…
