Stourbridge 4 Hitchin Town 1

Saturday, January 26 2013

On paper, it looks like a drubbing, but the extent of the Canaries’ defeat at one of the best sides in the Premier was a little harsh. You don’t lose 4-1 unluckily, but the current Hitchin line-up cannot be faulted for effort or commitment.

Stourbridge are genuine promotion contenders, and in many ways, Hitchin could have done without a fixture against such a good side at this stage of their rebuilding. But for 45 minutes, Carl Williams’ men more than lived with Stourbridge.

Things started badly, when a Ben Billingham corner rolled to Luke Benbow and his shot was deflected into the net after just over a minute. But surprisingly, the Canaries equalised a minute later, Jake Woolley pushing the ball to John Frendo and he somehow kept his balance to send a weak shot past new Stourbridge keeper Dean Coleman

Hitchin struggled at times with the home side’s aerial threat, notably with headers from Nathan Bennett and Paul McCone. Frendo went close for the Canaries, however, with a shot across goal that was just wide. Danger man Benbow almost restored Stourbridge’s lead with a drive that was just wide of the Hitchin goal. By the interval, though, Hitchin could be satisfied with their first half’s work.

Hitchin came out strongly in the second period and almost grabbed the lead in the 51st minute when the ball was driven to the far post and Daniel Webb hit the woodwork with a lunging shot.

In the 54th minute, however, Stourbridge went ahead with an outstanding goal. Benbow controlled a long throw on his chest and then volleyed on the turn past Jonathan North.

Six minutes later, Benbow secured his hat-trick, poking the ball home from six yards after a low cross from McCone evaded the Hitchin defence.

Hitchin were finished at this point and there was a danger of a rout developing and only a couple of good saves from North prevented that from happening. With 10 minutes remaining, Stourbridge scored again, Sean Geddes netting from the penalty spot after Sam Berry had brought down Ben Billingham.

Hitchin had a late chance to pull a goal back when Jhai Dhillon worked his way into the area, only to be denied by Coleman.
