Hitchin Town 5 Whitehawk 0

Monday, September 24 2012

It was “fire in the bellies” time at Top Field as a rejuvenated Hitchin side disposed of 80s rock band soundalikes Whitehawk before a pitifully low sub-200 crowd.

Hitchin are now two wins away from reaching the FA Cup first round for the first time in 17 years, the first of which will have to be negotiated at Whitehawk’s Ryman Premier neighbours Hastings United.

The Canaries came out of the traps for this replay at full pelt, with John Frendo, in particular making up for a lack luster display on the south coast. Frendo scored twice to take his FA Cup total to five, rekindling memories of glorious cup runs of the past.

It wasn’t just Frendo who started well. He was involved in Hitchin’s first goal on six minutes, but it was Luke Gregson that slid the ball into the net.

But Whitehawk, as they had done in the first meeting, demonstrated they are a determined outfit and although Hitchin won by five goals, the Sussex side can consider themselves a little unfortunate.
They almost equalized in the 18th minute when Pearson grazed the crossbar with a 35-yard shot and their tall forward, Scott McGleish, was a handful.

But Hitchin netted a second goal on 24 minute when Frendo fell over a Knee – that was the full back’s name – and a penalty was awarded. Frendo blasted home with ease.

Just before the break, however, McGleish tested Martin Bennett and Jones scuffed his shot with the goal beckoning. It could easily have been a different tale if either had found the net.

That was left to Hitchin in the 46th minute, Ieuan Lewis finding Frendo who drove low for his second goal. That should have been that, but McGleish and his team-mates refused to give up.

Frendo was denied once more by Winterton and then Lewis tried his luck, running across the pitch and sending a fierce shot in that the goalkeeper did well to stop.

In the 65th minute, though, Hitchin scored again, Louis Lee hitting the crossbar and Dean Gilbert scoring from the rebound.

Four minutes later, Lewis scored the fifth, receiving a long ball and slotting past Winterton. And there were still 20 minutes to go. Whitehawk still carried on running, despite going down to 10 men.

So the Hitchin FA Cup bandwagon continues its journey – 11 goals in two ties, two tricky away games dealt with and an in-form striker. Sounds very much like 1994-95 all over again…
