Hitchin Town 1 Biggleswade Town 0

Saturday, December 14 2013

Hitchin completed their sixth consecutive league win and their eighth in all by beating local rivals Biggleswade Town but it was a really hard fought victory. Biggleswade dominated possession from the start and Brett Donnelly twice shot over the bar in the first 23 minutes and Hitchin only created their first chance after 27 minutes when Sam Barker shot wide.

But on the half hour it was Callum Donnelly who provided the one moment of real class in the game with an exquisite chip over Ian Brown after a Simon Martin pass. Donnelly is scoring plenty of goals at the moment and he is very influential to his side and it is no coincidence the winning run has coincided with his return to his best form. How Callum would have enjoyed getting one over brother Brett!

Stuart Pearson headed wide from a Michael Noone cross but the 1-0 half time scoreline was harsh on Biggleswade. The early stages of the second half again saw Bigglewade dominate possession but for all of this they failed to force a save from Tahj Bell and the Hitchin defence worked really hard to keep the clean sheet. This was a classic  'win ugly' performance with Hitchin again showing that they are a difficult side to beat even if the players are not at their best. They coped with all that Biggleswade threw at them and had to overcome losing both Donnelly and Dan Webb to injury. Biggleswade play a very direct style and have a very dangerous long throw in their armoury and it was easy to see why they had only lost one of their last eleven games.

Hitchin had their first chance of the second half in the 86th minute with Rogan McGeorge choosing to shoot when he perhaps should have crossed to a team mate in a better position. The referee played six minutes of injury time but Hitchin held on to win a valuable three points and move above Biggleswade to eighth in the table.

Huge credit must go to the management and players for this remarkable sequence of eight straight wins which has seen many different attributes being needed and the sheer guts and determination of the team has deserved the rewards they have earned. It will not get any easier for Hitchin as they now face three tough away games at Cambridge City, Bideford and Arlesey.
