Hitchin Town 0 Boreham Wood 1

Thursday, March 27 2014

A hard-fought 1-0 win for Boreham Wood at Top Field last night resulted in Hitchin's exit from the Herts Senior Cup.

Hitchin started brightly and were obviously determined to stamp their authority on to the Skrill South Division outfit. The whole team pressed, defended and encouraged each other from the off.

It didn't take long to see where Boreham Wood's strengths were though, as their first attack was led by a quick Matthew Wichelow, who had instant support getting forward from Loick Pires, Junior Morias and Lee Angol.

End to end football was eventually broken by Boreham Wood in the 24th minute. Greg Morgan's free kick caused some chaotic play in the box - with the ball eventually falling to Lee Angol, who's shot went off the post and in.

The goal was disappointing for the Canaries as they had worked hard for the entire 24 minutes. However, they did not let their heads drop and they continued pressing in search of an equaliser.

Simon Martin had a great opportunity when a botched clearance gifted him with the ball in the box. His shot went wide of the post though and he could not hide his disbelief at missing Hitchin's best chance of the half.

The second-half started very much the same, with both sides on the attack. A promising attack from Boreham Wood was cut out by some great team defending from the Canaries and soon after, Hitchin's Charlie Smith had a great effort that was just over the bar.

Controversy ensued when the referee pointed to the penalty spot for a foul on Boreham Wood's Junior Morias. However, after consulting with the linesman, the decision was reversed and the referee restarted play with a drop ball. Boreham Wood were puzzled and angered by the event.

Gary Wharton came on for Michael King in the 65th minute and he immediately made an impact. He outpaced Boreham defender Cameron Mawer and put in a great cross - the clearance falling to Callum, who's resulting shot was deflected for a corner. Boreham Wood were clearly flustered by the danger posed and their defending showed it. After two corners, a clearance off the line and a couple of reaction saves from the keeper, they eventually cleared the ball from danger.

In the latter stages of the game, Callum Donnelly and Sam Barker both tried long range shots which were off-target but Charlie Smith did come close with one of his signature free-kicks - the ball flying just over the crossbar.

The final piece of action came from a Boreham Wood counterattack - Junior Morias finding himself clean through but subsequently missing an open goal after Canary goalkeeper Tahj Bell had wrongly decided to rush out.

It was a bitterly disappointing result for Hitchin as they challenged Boreham Wood right to the end but they should find solace in a never say die team performance. If they approach their League game against Weymouth in the same way on Saturday, then they may just find some joy in what is likely to be a difficult away fixture.

Thank you to all the Hitchin fans who came out to support the team on a very cold night. There was a great, friendly atmosphere and even some impromptu football discussions where I was sitting...Garry Jones for Real Madrid?
