Corby Town 1 Hitchin Town 2

Wednesday, November 27 2013

This was a great win for Hitchin at in form Corby and meant they recorded a third consecutive league win. Yet the night started badly as terrible traffic problems meant several players as well as the manager and his assistant were late arriving disrupting the match preperations. Indeed Tahj Bell was named on the team sheet despite not having arrived at the ground but luckily he made it just in time.

Therefore it was all the more creditable that Hitchin took the lead after just 5 minutes when Stuart Pearson stabbed home after Corby failed to clear a corner and this continued the rich scoring vein of the Hitchin centre backs in recent games.Bell has been looking back to his best in recent games and he made the first of a number of quality saves after 18 minutes from Sam Ives and his excellent performance was reminiscent of his display at Truro.

Corby looked very dangerous going forward and equalised after 20 minutes when Chris Carruthers smashed home from 20 yards giving Bell no chance. Tom Berwick had a shot deflected over the bar but Hitchin hit back with shots by Callum Donnelly and Kim Forsythe that went just wide.

Hitchin were playing neat passing football akin to the early season performances and they grabbed the lead when Donnelly was brought down by Brad-Lee Gascoigne for an obvious penalty after 34 minutes. Simon Martin hit a powerful penalty that Paul Walker got a hand to but stood no chance of saving.

In the second half Hitchin continued to create chances with Forsythe shooting just over the bar on 47 minutes. Lewis Rolfe replaced Rogan McGeorge after 59 minutes with Matt Lench moving in to midfield and Rolfe shot wide after good work by Martin and Forsythe. A magnificent 40 yard pass by Michael Noone set Forsythe free and his shot went just over the bar.

Bell saved well from Greg Mills before making a brilliant double save after 81 minutes. But his best was still to come as Noone handled in the area after 86 minutes and Bell dived to push away a well struck penalty from Berwick.

Hitchin were good value for the win against an impressive Corby side. It was an all round team performance with a huge work ethic running through the team. The workrate was really impressive with plenty of pressing while the passing was the most impressive for some time. Defensively Hitchin were outstanding with Bell at his best the centre backs dominant and the full backs also on form.

Mark Burke will not be carried away by this result but the signs are really promising as momentum continues to build.

Hitchin:  Bell, Lench, Bickerstaff, Barker, Webb, Pearson, McGeorge, Donnelly, Martin, Forsythe, Noone  Subs King for Forsythe 90+1, Hulman, Burtenshaw, Jones,Rolfe for McGeorge 58
