Hitchin Town vs Redditch United

Two goals in as many minutes ensured Redditch took all three points at Top Field on Saturday.

The game started on a fairly even basis, as neither side could find a consistent rhythm to their game and long ball play was very much the focus.

However, in the 29th minute, the game turned on its head.

A quick counter-attack from Redditch caught the Hitchin defence short and goalkeeper Tahj (realising the potential danger),ran out of the box to help. He did well to get to the ball first but his header, unfortunately, fell to Redditch's Ahenkorah, who took advantage of the open goal and chipped the ball nicely in to the back of the net.

Then, just two minutes later, Ahenkorah struck again as he capitalised on some frantic defending from Hitchin inside their box, making it 2-0 to the visitors. To make matters worse for the home side, the initial ball into the box had come from a needless free kick that Canary defender Josh Bickerstaff had given away - earning himself a yellow card in the process for exhibiting unsportsmanlike behaviour towards the referee.

The remainder of the first-half was very much back to inconsistent possession from the two sides, although Matt Lench came close for Hitchin in the latter stages - striking just over the crossbar.

Half-Time

Hitchin started the second-half brighter than the first and long ball play was replaced by neat passing across the pitch. However, they just could not find a goal.

Goal opportunities for both sides came mostly from free kicks - too many of which were the result of cynical challenges. These unnecessary free kicks allowed for some dangerous balls into the box - although neither side could make the most of them. Hitchin's Stuart Pearson headed just over the bar on one occasion and teammate Simon Martin failed to hit the target in the latter stages of the game too.

Callum Donnelly had a couple of half-chances for the Canaries - just missing the target with a long range strike and again with a strike whilst on the turn. He could not hide his frustration on another of his missed opportunities - after making a great run through the Redditch defence he uncharacteristically shot straight at goalkeeper Sam Hornby.

Redditch had a weak penalty shout in the final stages of the game. Substitute Jamie Molyneux felt as though he had been bundled over but the referee was unmoved by the shouts from the Redditch team and their travelling fans.

In terms of overall play, there was little to separate the two sides but Redditch made the most of the opportunities presented to them and their defence held on well to deny Hitchin any consolation.
