Hitchin Town 4 St Neots Town 0

Monday, October 7 2013

Hitchin's season has been blighted so far with excellent approach work being let down by a failure to convert the numerous chances created. It has meant the points total has not reflected the quality of the performances and going in to the St Neots game the worrying fact was that Hitchin had not won since 26 August with 4 draws followed by 3 defeats. Manager Mark Burke had urged caution as he felt with a young squad there would be a learning curve and eventually it would come right and the goals would come. After a fairly flat performance on Saturday it was a very different Hitchin performance against St Neots and the potential of previous weeks at last turned in to an emphatic victory as the goals rained in at Top Field.

Hitchin started with their first choice back four for the first time since the first game of the season as Lewis Rolfe came back after his suspension and made a good start to the game taking a deserved lead after 11 minutes when Callum Donnelly's corner was headed on by Stuart Pearson for Robbie Burns to finish from close range. It was Burns again after 28 minutes adding his second goal after a great run and cross by Jamal Lowe as Hitchin's dominance was rewarded. Simon Martin had to be replaced by Michael King on the stroke of half time after getting injured.

The start of the second half saw St Neots have their best spell of the game as they really pushed on to Hitchin but apart from a shot from Bobby- Joe Taylor that came back off the inside of the post Hitchin defended with good discipline. The lively Burns came close to his hat trick while Donnelly also came close. Michael Noone replaced Lowe who had played really well after 68 minutes and although Tahj Bell made a good save from Lewis Hilliard Hitchin remained in control. Neat play down the left hand side saw Noone pass to King who finished well from close range after 83 minutes and the night got better as King added his second after 94 minutes after good work by Donnelly.

So at last Hitchin had their due reward and this performance will only boost confidence for the rest of the season. Josh Bickerstaff continued his impressive run with a man of the match performance and a settled back four will be a great boost after the numerous injury problems. An excellent gate of 309 were well rewarded for their continued loyalty.

Hitchin: Bell, Rolfe, Bickerstaff, Lench, Webb, Pearson, McGeorge, Donnelly, Martin, Burns, Lowe, Subs King for Martin 45, Barker for Lench 81, Wharton, Noone for Lowe 68, Burtenshaw.

Att: 309
