Truro City 1 Hitchin Town 1

Saturday, August 31 2013

The longest journey in the club's history looked likely to have a happy ending until Truro equalised in the 4th minute of stoppage time to deny Hitchin a win they deserved. The 618 mile round trip saw Hitchin and Truro produce a really entertaining game that saw two excellent goalkeeping performances as shots rained in on goal from both teams. Truro named their goalkeeper Olly Chenoweth man of the match while Tahj Bell was absolutely outstanding for Hitchin as both sides did well to cope with the strong wind.

Hitchin were dealt a number of blows as far as selection was concerned with Dan Webb still injured while Simon Martin, Sam Barker and Michael King were unavailable. Stuart Pearson returned to partner Josh Bickerstaff in central defence while Alasan Ann had to move up front. Nevertheless Hitchin made a bright start with Callum Donnelly testing the keeper after good work from Jamal Lowe and Michael Noone in the 7th minute. Bell then made a brilliant save from Les Afful before Rogan McGeorge took advantage of hesitant Truro defending to put Hitchin ahead in the 27th minute. Bell made another good save when the ball deflected goalwards off Lewis Rolfe before Hitchin created a number of good chances. Donnelly came close with a lob while Pearson had a header cleared off the line and Lowe forced a fine save from Chenoweth after a good run and shot.

The a minute before half time Bickerstaff upended the dangerous Afful for a clear penalty. Bell produced a magnificent save from Copp's well struck penalty - a case of a penalty saved rather than a penalty missed.

The second half saw Hitchin with the wind behind them and the open nature of the game continued.Robbie Burns missed a good chance after good work from the dangerous Lowe who soon forced another good save from Chenoweth. Lucas Kirkpatrick made his League debut replacing the injured McGeorge after 54 minutes and acquitted himself well.Bell made yet another good save from Afful  before Burns scuffed a shot, while the bar denied Lowe a deserved goal after a thunderous shot.Ann then headed wide before Liam Eddy hit the outside of the post after rounding Bell. The chances still came at both ends with Lowe again hitting the bar and Kirkpatrick coming close while Jake Ash was just wide for Truro.

In the 4th minute of injury time Hitchin hearts were broken when Ash scored from close range to claim a share of the points. The amount of extra time seemed excessive but Truro never gave up. So an excellent game of football that the 412 crowd appreciated. If Hitchin continue to play like this there is good reason to be optimistic and the Hitchin fans will certainly be entertained by Mark Burke's young side.

Hitchin Town particularly thank the 15 fans for making the arduous journey.
