Hitchin Town 3 Weymouth 2

Monday, December 9 2013

This seventh consecutive win saw Hitchin show a side to their game that has not always been apparent in the past as they showed great character to come back from 2-1 down and there was an inner belief and steely determination that would not be denied as the comeback was completed for a 3-2 win.

Weymouth did not look like a side in crisis and their manager had wielded the axe to make four changes to Saturday's line up and certainly got the response he wanted as they provided a tough challenge for Hitchin throughout the game. Hitchin started well and Callum Donnelly  had a shot well saved by Jason Matthews after just 3 minutes before scoring a cracking goal 9 minutes later after an excellent move that saw Kim Forsythe feed Josh Bickerstaff on the overlap and an inviting cross was lashed home.

However Weymouth quickly replied and the lead lasted just 4 minutes before Scott Walker smashed  a free kick in to the corner of the net with Tahj Bell having no chance of keeping it out. The rest of the half was fairly even with the giant Weymouth central defenders proving hard to break down.

Hitchin started the second half quite lethargically and an unnecessary foul by Bickerstaff on 54 minutes not only earned him a booking but the resultant free kick was perfectly delivered for Michael Walker to head home. But all credit to Hitchin who suddenly lifted their game up a gear displaying their new found resilience and were level just 5 minutes later as Dan Webb scored a towering header from Michael Noone's corner. Webb is proving a really good threat at dead ball kicks and has hit a purple patch of goal scoring form.

Simon Martin came close on 63 minutes as Hitchin were now in the ascendancy and was just wide after another good move involving Donnelly and Bickerstaff. But Bell came to Hitchin's rescue on 78 minutes with a magnificent save from Stewart Yetton and in the same minute Hitchin clinched the win from the best move of the night. Noone provided a breathtaking 40 yard pass to Sam Barker who in turn found Forsythe and with plenty still to do he finshed with aplomb.Terry Dixon had  replaced Martin and Michael King came on for Donnelly as Weymouth refused to lie down and Hitchin worked really hard to maintain their advantage. Dixon had a shot well saved 5 minutes in to injury time before the final whistle came with a fifth successive league win secured.

Hitchin did not hit the same heights as they did at Hungerford but the tenacity and will to win were really impressive in what was essentially a team performance where it would be unfair to pick out individuals. Confidence is really high and there is a real togetherness about the team that augurs well for the future. A local derby with F A Cup heroes Biggleswade is next up for Hitchin at Top Field on Saturday where a big crowd can be expected.

Hitchin: Bell, Lench, Bickerstaff, Barker, Webb, Pearson, McGeorge, Donnelly, Martin, Forsythe, Noone, Subs  King for Donnelly 79, Gregson, Wharton for McGeorge 89, Jones, Dixon for Martin 71.
