Biggleswade Town 3 Hitchin Town 7

Wednesday, December 3 2014

Hitchin went goal crazy in a ten goal thriller that left Biggleswade stunned. On a freezing evening The Canaries warmed up for Saturday's free match in the best possible way by hitting seven past the Waders.

The one change from Saturday was the return of Brett Donnelly to partner Nat Peacock up front as they both returned haunt their former club. Lewis Kirkpatrick continued his run in midfield.

The game started evenly with Hitchin soaking up some pressure and Horlock being called upon to punch one ball firmly clear. However Hitchin looked dangerous on the break and Biggleswade's defence looked shaky. As against Dunstable, Hitchin hit a 3 goal salvo in a matter of minutes. First, on 15, the ball came to Peacock on the halfway line, he took it superbly in his stride, and showed good composure as he advanced through the home defence and fired past Brown.

Within a minute the score had doubled as Lench unleashed a shot from 25 yards which was well placed into the corner but seemed to be covered by Brown.

Peacock then headed just wide from a McNamara cross but on 20 minutes, Brett Donnelly scored the third with a fierce shot from an angle.

Brown was called into action again to keep out shots from McNamara and Lench. However Biggleswade still looked to attack and, after a good save by Horlock from Bossman, a challenge on the same player was deemed to be inside the area after the referee consulted with his assistant. Bossman made no mistake as he fired to the right while Horlock dived the other way (36 minutes).

Hitchin responded almost immediately as Donnelly set up Lench for a shot which was turned away for a corner. From that corner the ball pinged around the area and shots from Lench and Kirkpatrick were blocked before Peacock tucked his second of the night away on 39 minutes. Peacock could have had a hat trick on 43 when he cut in from the flank and elected to shoot and blazed over rather than cutting the ball back.

That appeared an expensive miss as just before half time, Hitchin failed to clear a Biggleswade freekick. It fell to Ives who expertly volleyed home to give the hosts hope for the second half.

That hope burned bright five minutes into the second half when a Biggleswade corner wasn't cleared. Horlock palmed the ball onto the feet of Allinson who reduced the deficit to one goal.

However Hitchin bounced back straightaway as they went straight to the other end and Lench hit a swerving shot over Brown to make it 5-3.

Hitchin's front two were proving a menace to Biggleswade and Gentle tried to respond by falling pole-axed after a clash with Donnelly; the referee - who was unobtrusive and tried to let the game flow - simply had words with both players.

Biggleswade tried to reply but their opportunities were sporadic. One misplaced clearance by Rolfe fell to Corran who slipped and let in Beech. However Horlock pulled off a good save to stop his shot.

Hitchin continued to look to go forward from all positions and Alasan Ann, having advanced out of defence a few minutes earlier, got his reward on 63 minutes. He again broke forward, fed Peacock and continued his run to reach the box just as the ball dropped to him. He took the ball on his chest and fired into the roof of the net in one move for a well-taken sixth goal for Hitchin.

Hitchin continued to press with midfield layers looking to run behind the defence but the most clear cut chance fell to Donnelly as Barker slipped the ball through to him with only the keeper to beat. While other players were up with him, he tried to dink the ball over Brown but delayed his shot and the ball was cleared.

Simon Martin replaced Brett as the game entered the last ten minutes and got a shot in which was turned away for a corner. From the set piece, the ball finally landed at the feet of Peacock who tapped home from close range to complete his hat trick (85 minutes).

Hitchin continued to look sharp with Brown having to get down to stop a cross shot from McNamara but that was the end of the goal feast. In truth Hitchin could have had more as the home defence struggled to cope with them. The final score moved the Canaries to 11th in the league; it left fans reaching for their record books and looking forward to Saturday's game against the league leaders - no excuse not to be at Top Field on Saturday!
