Biggleswade United 0 Hitchin Town 2

Tuesday, February 10 2015

Hitchin won their first trophy under Mark Burke and the players got valuable match practice after a spate of postponements. However, most importantly, the spirit of the football family supporting each other shone through clearly.

The early exchanges were even. A competitive Hitchin line-up saw early half chances by McNamara and Donnelly. However Biggleswade were up for the match and didnít display the ring rustiness that was understandably present in some of the early Canaries play, having not had a match for over two weeks.

Hitchin looked like they had taken the lead when a ball played in by McNamara was met by Donnelly. He glanced the ball goal-wards and it appeared to have crossed the line before Simon Martin followed up to make sure. However the officials ruled that the ball had not crossed before Martin made contact and he had been in an offside position.

Chances also fell for Biggleswade but their best opportunity went wide. Hitchin could again have taken a half time lead as Donnelly juggled the ball in the area but his attempted chip over the keeper went wide, while Noone had a powerful shot just before the interval, that Beckwith had to parry.

Half time saw the start of the expected substitutions as Lucas Kirkpatrick and Nat Peacock replaced Lench and Martin.

However Biggleswade were still attacking with no little threat, particularly through substitutes Peters and Samuda, and a great chance fell for Cookman. He advanced into the area, drew Johnson wide out of his 6 yard box and shot past him. However Dan Webb got back on the line to put the ball clear.

It was then the hosts turn to clear off the line. A freekick for a foul on McNamara, after which he was substituted by Williams, was met by Donnelly and although he nodded past the keeper, the ball was cleared off line.

Going into the final ten minutes, the game could have gone either way, as Rees and Kirkpatrick tried their luck. However the deadlock was finally broken by two of the other Hitchin subs. Peacock held up the ball and played it back to the lively Williams who fired from the edge of the area low into the right corner of the goal. Although Biggleswade had just changed their keeper, Beckwithís deputy had no chance with the shot.

Biggleswade tried to get back into the game but the result was put beyond doubt when the same two players reversed roles. Williams ran at the defence down the right flank, chipped the ball over the keeper and across the goal for Peacock to convert with†an easy tap in at the far post.

It remained for Dan Webb to receive the inaugural Save Top Field Trophy from the presentation party that included Guillem Balague, Jim White and Tony Cascarino. That the event was well organised was testimony to the efforts put in by Biggleswade United and the support shown for Hitchin Town FC and Top Field were the final memories of the game.
