Burnham 0 Hitchin Town 0

Saturday, December 13 2014

It is fair to say this game will not linger too long in the memory. A very difficult pitch made good passing football almost out of the question and it was sticky and bobbly meaning many high balls being played. But there are positives to be taken for Hitchin as this draw extended the unbeaten run and was a second clean sheet in three games Also Burnham are under new management and defended with great purpose although Hitchin grew stronger as the game wore on and were the most likely team to snatch a winner. As Mark Burke said after the game, you are always pleased with a point away from home and a clean sheet but he was also disappointed not to get the win he felt we probably deserved.
Hitchin named an unchanged team from the Chippenham game with Ian Rees continuing in midfield. Goalmouth action was at a premium in the first half although Brett Donnelly probably had Hitchin's best chance when he headed a Jonny McNamara cross wide of goal. Charlie Horlock was rarely troubled in goal making a routine save from Romaine Walker but otherwise  not called in to action. One of the better moves of the first half saw Sam Barker put his shot over the bar.
The second half was again quite dour with defences on top. Nat Peacock hit a powerful shot after 66 minutes after good play by Matt Lench but Alex Lynch produced an excellent save. Just before this Peacock had produced an inviting cross but nobody got on the end of it. After 80 minutes Donnelly and Peacock were replaced by Simon Martin and Lucas Kirkpatrick and Hitchin were now in the ascendancy and dominated possession to the end of the game,
Loud penalty shouts were ignored by the referee when Lench appeared to be pushed by keeper Lynch and then player manager Danny Gordon received a straight red card for a poor challenge on McNamara in the 90th minute. Burnham held out in injury time but Hitchin are now unbeaten in 6 games with only one defeat in 8 games. They displayed a good work ethic with plenty of pressing and closing down and defensively they are now much more organised than during the recent bad run. There remains plenty to play for as Hitchin aim to continue pushing up the table.
