Hitchin Town 0 Burnham 2

Monday, November 3 2014

Hitchin surrendered their FA Trophy hopes after losing 2-0 to Burnham in their First Qualifying Round replay.

The opening stages were quiet and other than an off-target free-kick from Burnham's Tom O'Regan and a troublesome ball in to the visitors' box from Hitchin's David Corran, neither side could find their feet.

Jonny McNamara had the first shot of the game, but Burnham goalkeeper Alex Lynch had his goal well covered to catch the curling effort.

McNamara was then in action moments later - Brett Donnelly playing the ball forward in to space for the Canary winger, who then ran in to the box before seeing his shot go wide.

Burnham's Romaine Walker then had a shot outside of the area which was an easy catch for Johnson.

A Hitchin free-kick in a dangerous area saw both Robbie Burns and Charlie Smith step up to take it. It was Smith who tried his luck, with Lynch having to pull off a great save to deny the home side the lead. Lynch then did well at the resulting corner, punching the ball clear from danger.

Burnham should have taken the lead on the half hour mark, after poor defending from the Canaries left Kofi Lockhart-Adams unmarked in the box. Fortunately for Hitchin, the Burnham forward headed the ball straight in to the arms of Johnson.

Seconds later, a curling ball in to the box from Burns looked promising, but consequently was just too heavy for Donnelly to slot home.

Burnham then took the lead in the 39th minute, courtesy of Lockhart-Adams, who was given enough time and space in the box to head past Johnson.

Minutes after the restart, Tinashe Chabata made a well-timed tackle to deny Lockhart-Adams a second.

Just before the half-time whistle, McNamara won a free-kick just outside the box. It was Burns who tried his luck this time, but his curling effort was well off-target.

The first chance of the second-half fell to the home side. A deep ball in to the box from Michael Noone went straight to Dan Webb at the far post, who side-footed his shot over the crossbar.

In the 51st minute, Johnson pulled off a great save to deny Nicke Kabamba. The Canaries' keeper got just enough of the ball to force it on to the crossbar and away from danger.

Moments later, a great strike from Walker called Johnson in to action again - the Hitchin keeper pushing the ball away at the expense of a corner.

Hitchin's best chance of an equaliser came in the 62nd minute, with Burns' powerful shot saved out wide to Donnelly, who then put a dangerous ball in across the face of goal. It just needed the slightest of touches in the direction of the goal to draw the Canaries level.

Donnelly then saw his headed effort go straight in to the arms of Lynch.

Burnham then made it 2-0 in the 79th minute. It was Kabamba who capitalised on a long ball, getting the better of the Hitchin defence and then heading past Johnson.

Kabamba then came close to making it 3-0 - his headed effort from Adam Bernard's cross going just wide of the post.

A wasted ball from Smith and a wayward shot from Burnham's O'Regan then capped off what was a fairly uneventful game.
