Hitchin Town 4 Burnham 0

Saturday, April 18 2015

Hitchin finished their season in style as they fired four second half goals against bottom-placed Burnham.

The opening stages consisted of little in the way of entertainment and the visitors could only offer two off target shots through Ollie Emsden, while the Canaries saw David Corran head wide from a corner and Sam Barker only manage a wayward shot.

As the first half wore on there was more urgency to create opportunities but there was never any real threat of an opener.

Burnham's Carl Davies should have done better in the 33rd minute when he wasted the time and space gifted to him with a scuffed cross that went straight behind for a goal kick, and Jonny McNamara looked to have scored minutes later but was instantly flagged for offside.

An off target shot from Burnham's Andy Forisky then capped off what was an uneventful first half.

Half Time: Hitchin Town 0-0 Burnham

The second half started better and the Canaries took the lead in the 56th minute through Corran's well placed header. It was Lucas Kirkpatrick who had the initial shot - a powerful strike that Burnham goalkeeper Brendan Hazlett kept out with a spectacular save. However, the resulting corner saw Corran head home.

The opening goal proved to be a turning point in the game and Hitchin's confidence grew as they started to control the game with ease.

Kirkpatrick should have made it two in the 62nd minute after beating the offside trap and venturing forward for one vs one with the goalkeeper. Hazlett, however, rushed out and did just enough to force the Canary man in to a tame shot which made for an easy save.
The miss didn't prove to be too costly though as three minutes later Callum Donnelly produced a fine strike that put the Canaries 2-0 up.

With the momentum very much with the home side, Kirkpatrick deservedly got his name on the scoresheet...twice. His first goal came in the 71st minute after heading home a great ball from Ian Rees, and the second came just two minutes later via a fantastic finish that Hazlett had little chance of keeping out.

The visitors looked tired as the second half wore on and to make matters worse were unable to make any significant changes as they had just one substitute named. However, the defence, and Hazlett in particular, looked anything but beaten. The visiting keeper remained lively in the latter stages - easily collecting an 84th minute headed effort from Webb, before making a fantastic save moments later to deny Barker.

Burnham's Fergus Burton then finished the one-sided second half with an off target shot.
