Hitchin Town 2 Cambridge City 1

Monday, April 6 2015

Hitchin maintained their winning run with a 2-1 win over Cambridge City. Goals from Simon Martin and Dan Webb gave the Canaries a 2 goal lead by the hour. While a late Andrew Phillips goal offered some hope for the visitors, Hitchin saw out a deserved win.

Hitchin came into the game with two changes from Saturday's win at Frome, with Alasan Ann and Nat Peacock recovering from knocks. Lewis Rolfe partnered Dan Webb in the centre of defence, with Ben Walster at full back, while Simon Martin started upfront with Brett Donnelly. Former Canary Tom Pepper was not in the visitors squad having just left the club to pursue business interests.

After a cagey start to the game, in which Cambridge had slightly the better of play, it was Simon Martin who opened the scoring on 11 minutes. He latched onto a pass from Callum Donnelly and steered the ball past Barrett in the Cambridge goal.

From that point on, Hitchin had the upper hand as they took the game to Cambridge, particularly down the right side through McNamara and Smith. After one good run from Smith was rewarded with a corner, Simon Martin narrowly shot wide from Callum Donnelly's set piece. Donnelly also appeared to be through on goal but the assistant referee flagged for a debatable offside.

At the other end, Cambridge's prolific attack was feeding off scraps although Ben Walster got in a good saving tackle when Dawkin was in a good position.
Hitchin continued to create half chances but were missing the final touch - as when Lewis Rolfe couldn't quite connect with a Donnelly free kick - or were stopped by Barrett in the Cambridge goal. The keeper saved a close range shot from Martin and followed up at the feet of Rees. The half ended with Hitchin clearly on top.

HALF TIME Hitchin Town 1 Cambridge City 0

After the interval the pattern continued with another good stop by Barrett at the feet of McNamara as he ran onto a good pass from Brett Donnelly.

While Cambridge made attacking substitutes early in the half, it was Hitchin that claimed the important second goal. From a freekick in the 57th minute, Dan Webb at the far post headed the ball down and into the net for his second goal in successive home games.

Hitchin continued to make half chances with the Donnelly and McNamara combination again forcing Barrett to dive at the feet of the Hitchin Number 7 after he had outpaced Murray. However, the Cambridge substitutions shook their attack up with top-scorer Phillips shooting wide and Dawkin firing a free kick across the face of the goal. Gardiner headed narrowly over, while Reynolds shot was less accurate.

Hitchin looked to see out the game, bringing on Sam Barker for Callum - who had been a thorn in the side of Cambridge - and Liam Brooks for Simon Martin. Brooks set up Rees to deliver a cross but his final ball lacked accuracy.

On 86 minutes, the visitors did get what proved to be a consolation goal as Phillips got on the end of a Dawkin cross at the far post. While Cambridge sensed a chance for an unlikely equaliser, the Hitchin defence stood firm for the remaining minutes to claim the three points and take their winning run to Poole next week.
