Hitchin Town 4 Cheshunt 1

Monday, August 4 2014

Hitchin's competitive season got off to the best possible start with a comprehensive 4-1 defeat of Cheshunt to earn a Herts Charity Cup semi final at home to Royston. It was an impressive performance with plenty of attractive football on display. Mark Burke chose to play three centre backs with Matt Lench and Lewis Rolfe playing as wing backs and they pushed forward to good effect throughout the game. The midfield quartet showed plenty of flair together with hard work as they continually pressed any Cheshunt player in possession. The whole team were hungry for the ball and the tempo was good from the outset.

Jonny McNamara shot wide in the first minute as Hitchin played neat football from the beginning. Alasan Ann was harshly booked after 13 minutes despite winning the ball but Hitchin took the lead after 16 minutes. Robbie Burns was the scorer after Erbil Bozkurt spilled a McNamara shot. It was 2-0 after 30 minutes when a brilliant 25 yard free kick from the impressive Charlie Smith beat Bozkurt all ends up.

Hitchin were rampant and Lewis Rolfe made it 3-0 after another good move involving Burns and McNamara. It was a surprise when Cheshunt pulled a goal back after 42 minutes when Arjan Tajbakshah produced a good finish after Sam Barker had headed off the line.

The second half saw Hitchin dominate with plenty of exciting football. Lewis Rolfe hit his penalty with some power to make it 4-1 after McNamara was tripped in the area in the 50th minute. This made the result safe but Hitchin pressed for more goals. Rolfe came close to his hat trick when he hit the bar after a brilliant run while McNamara, Burns and Ann all came close to extending the lead. Lench forced the keeper to a fine save as Hitchin continued to probe and Cheshunt were forced to defend desperately. Cheshunt were always looking to play football themselves and were no pushover but Hitchin were really in the mood.

So this was an emphatic start to the season but Hitchin face a challenging opening to their League programme with no less than eight away games in the first twelve. But if Hitchin work as hard as they did tonight and maintain their fluid football there is every reason to hope the manager's aim of a top ten finish can be achieved.
