Corby Town 2 Hitchin Town 0

Saturday, August 9 2014

This was a disappointing start to the new season as Hitchin went down to a 2-0 defeat at Corby. Mark Burke continued with three centre backs and two wing backs with Sam Barker the holding midfielder, and ahead of him were the three attacking  midfielders with Simon Martin on his own up front. Mark Smith made his debut in goal on loan from Brentford and had an excellent game and was responsible for keeping the scoreline blank at half time.

He blocked well from Greg Mills after 30 minutes and made an even better save just before half time when he thwarted Akin Daramola. In truth Hitchin did not really get going in the first half. They started very nervously with too many misplaced passes and also played too many long balls. The wind was very strong and this exacerbated the problems Hitchin were having. Eventually they  did start to settle but Corby keeper Paul Walker was untroubled before the break. Jonny McNamara had come closest but he over ran the ball when in a good position.

The second half saw Hitchin make a better start and McNamara scored from a brilliant Charlie Smith pass after 50 minutes but was ruled offside. Eight minutes later McNamara had a shot tipped over the bar after a good move but then Alasan Ann was judged to have fouled Kalern Thomas in the area and Mills struck the penalty home despite Smith diving the right way.

Hitchin still created chances and Robbie Burns had a shot parried and Walker saved McNamara's follow up. Brett Donnelly replaced Simon Martin  but after 73 minutes Corby sealed the win when Wilson Carvalo headed home a left wing cross. Hitchin were not going down without a fight and forced Walker to make two excellent saves before the end. He somehow saved a fiercely struck shot from Ann after 82 minutes and did well to save a Michael King shot after 88 minutes.

Overall Hitchin will know they can play better but they did improve from a poor start and they  missed the suspended Lewis Rolfe whose absence led to positional changes that did not help their flow.
