Hitchin Town 0 Dorchester Town 0

Saturday, March 7 2015

Hitchin and Dorchester shared the points on Saturday afternoon, after a tame affair at Top Field resulted in a 0-0 draw.

The opening ten minutes was full of hopeful balls and passing problems - the recent weather having left parts of Top Field on the bobbly side.

The visitors looked the livelier of the two teams though and Lewis Rolfe and Bradley Tarbuck were having an entertaining battle from the start.

In the 23rd minute Saul Williams induced some excitement in to what was an uneventful start to the game - the Hitchin forward going for the spectacular with an overhead kick. Dorchester goalkeeper Alan Walker-Harris did well to push the effort over the crossbar.

A few minutes later Lucas Kirkpatrick had a long range effort which was well off target.
In the 37th minute, Hitchin were caught out after several players stopped to protest to the referee about a potential foul on Ian Rees. With the referee unmoved, Dorchester capitalised on the situation and had the chance to break. The Canaries would have been relieved to see Ben Watson's shot go wide.

Minutes later, the visitors had a free kick in a dangerous position after a foul by Kane Smith. The ball was unexpectedly put in to box along the ground, with Nathan Walker the target man. His shot was deflected behind and Alasan Ann then cleared the ball from danger at the resulting corner.

At the end of the first half Callum Donnelly put a low cross in to the Dorchester box, with Nat Peacock first to the ball. His shot, however, was excellently blocked by the Magpies defence.

Dorchester again started the livelier side and it was Walker who had the first opportunity to grab the opener. The Magpies forward did well to find space in the box but his headed effort went straight in to the arms of Charlie Horlock.

Moments later, Hitchin had an opportunity to give themselves the lead. After some great work from Jonny McNamara and Kirkpatrick, the ball was crossed in to the box, where an unmarked Peacock had been gifted a free header. The Canaries forward, however, saw his effort soar over the crossbar.

McNamara had the best chance of the game in the 68th minute. After venturing upfield and losing his marker, the midfielder beat the keeper with a powerful shot, only to see his effort hit the post and consequently cleared from danger.

The visitors were awarded a free kick in the 72nd minute after Rolfe was adjudged to have handled the ball - the Canaries defender picking up a yellow card in the process. Hitchin, however, setup well, and Tarbuck's effort struck the wall and went behind. The resulting corner saw Walker head wide.

The game then fell somewhat flat, and although both sides found some urgency in the latter stages, they both struggled to find an end product and consequently finished the game with a point apiece.
