Histon 1 Hitchin Town 1

Tuesday, November 18 2014

This was a vastly improved performance compared to recent games. Indeed the team sheet immediately offered hope of better things to come. Alasan Ann and Dan Webb returned to add stability to the defence with Dave Corran reverting to his favoured left back position and Harry O’Malley at right back. Sam Barker also returned after injury and he played a central midfield role with Lewis Rolfe and new signing from St Albans Dan Green either side of him. Matt Lench had a free role behind the front two of Brett Donnelly and Nat Peacock.

Hitchin made the best possible start by scoring after just 98 seconds, Peacock providing a clever finish to a Rolfe free kick .The defence looked much more organised and the whole team worked really hard with much more pressing of the opposition than in recent games. Charlie Horlock again exuded confidence and made a good save from Mateusz Kuzimski after 16 minutes. The first half was quite even and Lench and O’Malley both had shots go wide.

Donnelly had a shot saved at the near post early in the second half but had to be replaced by Simon Martin after 69 minutes. As the half wore on Histon began to get on top and Horlock made another excellent save from Eugene Libertucci after 71 minutes and two follow up efforts were heroically blocked by the defence. Histon used all three substitutes but Hitchin continued to battle despite several players lacking match fitness.

As time ticked away the feeling grew that Hitchin could hold on for a much needed win but in the 93rd minute a free kick was conceded in a dangerous position. 19 players were in the penalty box and a well directed kick was scrambled in by George Root. It was a cruel blow to the Hitchin side and almost felt like a defeat but it is the performance that mattered. If this commitment and defensive organisation is repeated for the rest of the season Hitchin’s recent poor run will become a bad memory. Ann and Webb made a huge difference with Horlock an assured presence, while Barker’s return gave a more solid look to the midfield. Green had a good debut while Peacock was a constant threat and has a good turn of pace. But above all it was a performance that showed a return to the hard work ethic that was so apparent in Hitchin’s good start to the season. The team must now build on this but confidence will have been boosted considerably.
