Hitchin Town 1 Poole Town 0

Saturday, December 6 2014

On a day when all eyes were on Hitchin Town and Hitchin Town Football Club, the Canaries' picked up a deserved three points against league leaders Poole Town.

The home side were anything but overawed by the occasion, with Dan Webb heralded the hero as he scored the match winner in the 89th minute.

Poole had the first opportunity to take the lead, with Lewis Tallack crossing in to Lamin Dibba, who headed over the crossbar.

Minutes later, Jonny McNamara imposed himself on to the game - running up the wing with ease and putting a great cross in to the box, although neither Brett Donnelly or Matt Lench could slot home. It just needed the slightest of touches in the direction of the goal to put the Canaries ahead.

Dolphins' midfielder Harrison Gilkes constantly looked a threat up the wing, and it took a well-timed tackle from David Corran to thwart an attempt to cross in to the box.
McNamara continued to make a nuisance of himself and on the half hour mark, he weaved in to the box with ease. His shot, however, was off-target.

Seconds later, McNamara was in action again, this time weaving through midfield and passing out wide to Lench, who had the space to put in a cross, which consequently sailed above all in the box.

Hitchin's keeper Charlie Horlock then pulled off an excellent save to deny Dibba from close range.

Hitchin's best chance of the half came just before the whistle, with Lench's corner kick dangerously soaring across the face of goal. Again, the slightest of touches would have put the Canaries in front.

Half-Time:

Hitchin Town 0-0 Poole Town

The second-half continued in much the same manner as the first-half, although Poole looked the livelier of the two sides, as they left Hitchin with little time on the ball.

However, the hosts did have an early chance, with Donnelly causing problems in the box. After forcing Poole defender Tallack in to conceding a corner, he then created himself some space in the area to make himself the target-man for Lench. His header, however, was off-target.

Hitchin continued to attack and it took good awareness from Poole goalkeeper Nick Hutchings to prevent Nat Peacock from a chance on goal. It was particularly good goalkeeping considering Peacock's speed would have undoubtedly made him favourite against his marker.

Moments later, Hutchings again showed quick reactions, this time cutting out McNamara's promising pass to Donnelly.

McNamara's constant impact on the game was evident when he was cynically fouled by Luke Roberts, which consequently earned the Poole player a booking.

Minutes after winning the free-kick, McNamara was on the attack yet again, but after making an excellent run upfield, he wrongly decided to take a shot at goal, with his attempt well off-target.

Poole then had a good opportunity to take the lead, with Michael Walker doing well to rise higher than Canaries' Captain Alasan Ann. His header, however, was off-target.
The visitors then had another chance minutes later. It was Gilkes again who looked threatening, and after venturing forward he crossed the ball in to Poole substitute Dan Munday. Canary keeper Horlock did well to smother the ball from the Poole forward's feet.

Moments later, Hitchin's Ian Rees saw his long-range effort go wide of the target.

As the game drew close to its end, McNamara won a free-kick in the visitors' half. Lench stepped up and promptly put an excellent ball in to the area, with Dan Webb up highest in the busy box. The Hitchin defender made the most of the opportunity and headed the ball past Hutchings with precision in the 89th minute.

Poole Town were then unsurprisingly eager to find an equaliser but the Hitchin defence were resilient and the hosts held strong throughout injury time to earn a hard-fought victory.

The win capped off a fantastic week for Hitchin Town, in which they also triumphed 7-3 over Biggleswade and orchestrated a successful Save HTFC day.
