Slough Town 2 Hitchin Town 1

Saturday, November 22 2014

This was a really frustrating result and those Hitchin supporters present are still wondering how Hitchin came to lose this game. Hitchin were the better team throughout, played the better football and were rarely troubled by Slough but conceded two goals in the second half from unchallenged headers - which was how the two goals were scored by Royston last week. So again this was a much improved performance to add to the second half against Royston and the display at Histon but there is now the need to add positive results to the  improved performances.
The only change from Histon saw Simon Martin replace the injured Brett Donnelly and it was again a 4-3-1-2 formation. Hitchin dominated the first half and should have been ahead at half time. Charlie Horlock made a good save from a James Dobson free kick early on but was otherwise untroubled. Martin flicked a header over the bar from a Sam Barker free kickand Martin forced a good save from Jake Somerville after a slick move. Barker shot just wide before Nat Peacock failed to connect properly hitting the best chance of the half wide four minutes from the break.
Michael Noone replaced the injured Nat Green at half time. Matt Lench forced Somerville to tip a good shot over the bar but just a minute later Slough took a 50th minute lead against the run of play. A good cross was met by the head of Ed Smith giving Horlock no chance. Hitchin kept going with Lench shooting over the bar before he fired an excellent equaliser after a cushioned header from Martin from a free kick set him up. It was no more than Hitchin deserved and Peacock came close after 67 minutes to gaining the lead. In a controversial moment soon after Peacock appeared to be fouled by the last defender but the referee chose to ignore Hitchin's claims for a free kick.
Hitchin still seemed the more likely team to score but Dan Webb had a free kick given against him  and was then made to leave the field to have a nose bleed dealt with. The free kick was taken with Webb still off the pitch and Billy Jeffreys profited with a free header to give Slough a fortuitous three points.
Hitchin must not dwell on the frustration and instead build on the improvement shown over the last two games. Results will surely follow but they must stop the spate of headed goals conceded and also halt the worrying number of late goals being scored against them in the last ten minutes of games.
Finally many thanks to the officials and supporters of Slough who gave great support to our Save Top Field campaign. The tannoy announcer encouraged fans to sign our petition and many did just that. Let us hope Slough can resolve their own ground issues and move back to their own ground in their own town.
