Hitchin Town 0 Weymouth 3

Monday, November 10 2014

Hitchin failed to pick up any points at home on Saturday afternoon, after Weymouth triumphed 3-0 on a very wet day at Top Field.

After a slow start to the game, Weymouth looked the more threatening and an early, dangerous cross from Stewart Yetton tested the Hitchin defence. It was Dan Webb who cleared the ball to safety.

At the other end, a risky clearance from Weymouth goalkeeper Jason Matthews saw the ball fall to Michael Noone, who tried to capitalise on the empty goal by trying his luck from long-range. However, Matthews quickly retreated to his area and caught the ball with ease.

A good ball in to the box from Chris Shephard looked promising for Yetton, but an alert Michael Johnson did well to intercept the ball and stop the Weymouth Captain from heading home.

Weymouth's confidence continued to grow and after teasing the Hitchin defence around the box with some intricate passing, courtesy of Shephard, Yetton and Chris McPhee, they finally took the lead in the 21st minute.

Johnson did well to save Yetton's initial shot but the Canaries' keeper could only save in to the path of Tristan Plummer, who promptly struck the ball into the bottom right hand corner.

Plummer increasingly became a bigger problem for the Hitchin defence. After skipping his way around the back of defence with ease, he cut the ball back to the top of the box, where Steve Colwell was lurking. Colwell's strike was saved by Johnson.

Soon after, Shephard wriggled past Ben Walster with confidence and his curling effort was just over the crossbar.

In the latter stages of the first-half, Robbie Burns saw his shot saved by Matthews.

Then, a loose ball from Walster ran to McPhee, with Johnson again called in to action. The Hitchin keeper saved at the expense of a corner, which resulted in Shephard trying a shot from a difficult angle, that was not far off the target.

The rain continued to pour down throughout the second-half and it was Weymouth who were again the brighter side.

It took just eight minutes for the visitors to double their lead - Shephard scoring, with a little help from Johnson. What looked to be a fairly routine save became a nightmare for the hosts, with the Canaries' keeper fumbling the ball in to the back of his own net.

Just seven minutes later, Shephard got his second to put Weymouth 3-0 up. A long-range effort from Yetton was pushed away by Johnson but Shephard was the first to react to the loose ball and fired home.

Hitchin were undeterred by the 3-0 deficit and continually looked to get something out of the game.

Jonny McNamara tried to flick the ball in to the box but was denied by the mud, which promptly put an end to any promising move. Lewis Rolfe also saw his powerful strike take a deflection behind and shortly after, Michael Noone saw his effort soar over the crossbar.

In a game that was somewhat restricted by the worsening weather, it was Weymouth who reigned supreme over the 90 minutes.
