Hitchin Town 3 Bedworth United 1

Monday, September 21 2015

Two goals in a minute, either side of the half time interval, saw Hitchin back on track after Bedworth had taken an early lead. However it wasn’t until 2 minutes before the final whistle that the Canaries made the game safe with the cushion of a third goal.

Having notched their first win on Saturday, the visitors forced an early save from Horlock with a shot from Naughton.  The Canaries did have the ball in the net first although it was not by fair means as Bickerstaff met a corner; he had though used his hand, the goal was chalked off and the Hitchin defender was rewarded with a yellow card.

The first legitimate goal though came on 21 minutes for the visitors. From a steepling Westwood freekick, Horlock failed to gather and the dangerous Naughton did the rest.

In terms of possession, the match was even but Hitchin’s passing hadn’t clicked into gear with long balls being swept up with ease by Bedworth’s defence. However as the half drew to a close, Kane Smith embarked on a couple of teasing runs while Donnelly nearly threaded a through ball into the path of Burns.

The Canaries finally got a lifeline just before the interval.  Lench sent in a low ball from the left hand side and Burns was brought down at the near post. The referee pointed to the spot and Lewis Rolfe put the spotkick away to Hinds’ right.

Hitchin’s second goal arrived barely one minute later, although the other side of the interval. After 18 seconds, Burns had played the ball into the path of McNamara who took the ball on and placed his shot past Hinds.

Hitchin started to play with confidence and more crispness in their passing after the goal flurry.  A Smith cross, after he was put through by Lench, nearly caused problems. The wing back then nearly got on the scoresheet himself as he and Hinds both went up for a deep Bickerstaff cross but the keeper just bundled the ball away.

Play switched from end to end as Bedworth searched for an equaliser. A Naughton freekick went just over and landed on the roof of the Hitchin net, while Creaney had two unsuccessful attempts following a Westwood freekick, and Rolfe was alert to cut out a further threat from Naughton.

At the other end, McNamara created problems, forcing Hinds to gather from a low cross and then getting past the keeper – who had advanced off his line – but taking the ball too far to get a shot in.

The result was still in doubt and Bedworth had two good late chances to draw level. First a teasing cross by Rowe found substitute Blenkinsopp but he was stretching to get to the ball and fired over. Then Haines met a Bedworth corner which Lench part cleared before Horlock desperately pushed the ball away for another corner.

The match was only made safe in the 88th minute when Lench chipped the ball over the Bedworth defence to leave Man of the Match Kirkpatrick clear on goal. He had time to compose himself and steer the ball past Hinds to wrap up the three points.

It was a good result for the Canaries, helping them to erase the memory of Histon and also setting them up for their FA Cup trip on Saturday.
