Hitchin Town 3 Biggleswade Town 0

Saturday, November 7 2015

Hitchin completed a comprehensive win against The Waders in a one-sided local derby. Goals from Callum Donnelly, Robbie Burns and Jonny McNamara separated the sides but the victory margin would have been greater without a string of saves from Biggleswade’s captain and keeper Ian Brown.

On paper the two sides looked evenly matched, sitting alongside each other in the league table and with several ex-Canaries in the visitors’ side. However Biggleswade had difficulty getting out of the starting blocks and their manager was critical of them straight after the match.

But perhaps that doesn’t give credit to The Canaries for not allowing them to get started? The Biggleswade defence struggled against both the speed of the returning McNamara and the aerial threat and physical presence of Brett Donnelly. At the other end the back four, reinforced by Alasan Ann playing just in front of them to snuff out danger, gave Charlie Horlock a relatively quiet afternoon.

After a cagey start, Hitchin started to apply the pressure. McNamara bought the ball under control and tried to take it around Brown. However the keeper got down to prevent that and to stop Burns from following up. He then dived to his right after Burns dug out a shot that was going just inside the post.

Brown prevented Webb getting his head on a corner after Ann had flicked on, and followed this by diving to keep McNamara out again after he had been played through by Brett Donnelly. The number 9 also put Burns through for a shot that hit the side netting.

During this period, Biggleswade could muster only an effort by Shane Hill that fizzed over the bar, and a glancing header wide by Burnett from a Hill corner.

In reply, Hitchin continued to find ways through and around the Biggleswade defence, but could not convert. Both a Brett Donnelly header, from a Burns cross, and a Sam Barker shot were cleared for corners, while Brown saved from Burns after a threatening build-up from Kane Smith and McNamara.

There was just an element of nervousness amongst fans that Hitchin’s possession might not get its reward. However the deadlock was broken on 37 minutes, although it took a deflection to finally beat the Biggleswade keeper. McNamara cut the ball back from the right side and it was met by Callum Donnelly. His shot took a deflection that wrong-footed the keeper.

Both sides managed to get the ball into the net before half time only to be flagged for offside – firstly a deflected shot from Barker was chalked off, and then a three man Biggleswade break was called back as Hilliard fired towards goal.

The visitors showed a little more urgency after the break with Hill heading a corner wide and Marsh trying an acrobatic shot. However, Hitchin still had the better chances. Two fell in succession to the tireless Callum Donnelly. Firstly the ball bounced over Hoyte's head and his slow reactions allowed Callum into space in front of goal before being closed down. Then he shot over after good work by Brett Donnelly and McNamara. Webb then put a strong header just wide from a corner.

By now though it was “when” rather than “if” a second goal arrived and, when it came, it was reward for fine passing football.

McNamara put Kane Smith away and, although his cross evaded Brett Donnelly who was attacking the six yard box, the ball was met sweetly by Robbie Burns at the back post on 71 minutes.

Biggleswade threw on all three substitutes at once but to little effect. Barker set up Callum Donnelly to deliver a cross that Brett headed just over, while Brown continued to keep the score down by coming out to thwart McNamara, who was put through by Callum Donnelly in a speedy Hitchin break.

Brown and Biggleswade were not so fortunate on 85 minutes though when Hitchin wrapped up the scoring. Sam Barker put McNamara clean through and this time he was rewarded as he slotted past the despairing Brown.

Mark Burke made substitutions with an eye to the upcoming cup matches while Horlock had to make one alert stop before the final whistle. However this was a convincing win that saw the Canaries move up to ninth in the table, with games in hand on those above them.
