Cirencester Town 0 Hitchin Town 0

Saturday, August 15 2015

While the game was not a classic and lacked goalmouth action it was always an interesting encounter. Hitchin who were unchanged from the Chesham game and again showed their defensive capabilities, limiting the threat of a Cirencester side who had won their first two games in some style.

It was the home side who had the first chance with Ross Langsworthy shooting badly wide after 4 minutes.Kane Smith who was excellent throughoutprovided Hitchinís main threat in the first half and he produced two surging runs, one that ended with a dangerous cross that nobody could get on the end of in the 25th minutewhile the second run saw a powerful shot go just wide on the stroke of half time. In between these incidents Josh Bickerstaff forced a save from Glyn Garner. Charlie Horlock was relatively untroubled in the first half but had a very good second half as Cirencester provided a greater threat.

Brad Hooper shot over the bar after 48 minutes before Matt Lench had a shot pushed round the post. Smith provided another good cross that was deflected making Simon Martinís header more difficult to direct goalwards. Robbie Burns replaced Lench after 65 minutes and Jonny McNamara then had a shot over the bar before having the best chance of the game. He found himself one on one with the keeper but chose not to chip him and was forced wide enabling Garner to make the save.

The last 10 minutes saw some dangerous Cirencester free kicks but the Hitchin defence stood firm. Horlock saved well from Leigh Henry with five minutes to go but neither side deserved to lose a game where a draw was a fair result. Manager Mark Burke was delighted with a point and the first clean sheet of the season and it was another hard working and organised performance with every playing putting in a good shift. After the disappointing defensive display against Stratford it has been reassuring to see the improvement since. Once the elusive missing striker can be found the potential for a very good season is certainly there.
