Hitchin Town 4 Corinthian 0

Saturday, July 25 2015

Hitchin overcame a hard working Corinthian side to put their pre-season back on track after the defeat at Kempston.

Corinthian, who play in the Southern Counties East League - at the same level as Kempston -  kept the Canaries at bay until three goals either side of half time decisively turned the tide.

Hitchin went into the game playing three central defenders and giving Nat Peacock his first start up front.

The first half was an even affair with the visitors attack looking lively. A freekick by Reardon was comfortably dealt with by Horlock while Connor could only find the roof of the net with a lob.

Corinthian's defence - led well by the captain Evans - managed to close down Hitchin's efforts. The home side's passing hadn't quite clicked into top gear but a couple of good runs down the right flank by Rolfe and McNamara showed promise.

The decisive moment in the first half came on 42 minutes when a run by Bickerstaff down the left side ended with a pinpoint cross to the head of Peacock. The striker deftly nodded it past Powell to give Hitchin a halftime lead.

HALF TIME Hitchin Town 1 Corinthian 0
Within seven second half minutes, Hitchin had put the result beyond doubt. Firstly, a Hitchin corner was only partly cleared and the resultant cross was met at the back post by Pearson on 49 minutes. On 52 minutes another attack down the left saw Lench deliver a low cross. This was met at the near post by a stretching Simon Martin, who had replaced Peacock at half time.

Hitchin nearly added another soon afterwards as Rolfe was played in on the right, advanced on goal and fired a fierce shot that Powell did well to deflect onto the bar.
Corinthian had a golden opportunity to pull one back when Tiageh misplaced an easy chance as he headed wide at the back post after a good Reardon cross.
Hitchin had the best of the remaining opportunities as the number of substitutions multiplied. Martin nodded wide from a McNamara cross, Lench hit the side netting with a low shot and McNamara blazed over. However they did wrap things up as the whistle approached. Powell came off his line to try and smother the ball but it only broke into the path of Barker. He had the time and composure to walk the ball into the net for Hitchin's fourth.

This was a solid win that enabled the squad to gain further match time and share the goal scoring against an opposition who will hope their level of performance stands them in good stead for the coming season.
