Hitchin Town 3 Dorchester Town 2

Saturday, March 5 2016

Hitchin grabbed the points in the race for the play-offs as a late Jonny McNamara winner separated the sides in a close and exciting encounter at Top Field.
Dorchester forced an early save as Bradley Tarbuck set up Luke Holmes, although the effort was straight at keeper Charlie Horlock. Hitchin conjured a response as a Jonny McNamara shot curled just round the far post. Magpies striker Toby Holmes was a real threat to the Hitchin defence and outpaced Lewis Rolfe before firing over on 16 minutes.
However the visitors continued to threaten and, after a period of mounting pressure, Dorchester took the lead on 25 minutes through Toby Holmes, who converted at the near post.
The Canaries though bounced back two minutes later. A long ball found Brett Donnelly in the heart of the penalty box with only keeper Murphy to beat. He slotted home with ease to level the scores.
Both sides had chances to take a half-time lead as Tarbuck forced Horlock to come out and save after a deflected ball had fallen nicely for the forward. At the other end, a surging run by Kane Smith involving a neat 1-2 with McNamara ended with a teasing cross which Callum Donnelly was unable to convert.

On 61 minutes, Hitchin took the lead for the first time in the game as a cross to the back post was nodded back by McNamara for Alasan Ann to slide in.
Dorchester clawed their way back into the game ten minutes later when a loose Hitchin pass was pounced upon. Dorchester skipper Jake Smeeton powered down the left flank and his cross was met by a perfect header from Ben Watson, which gave Horlock no chance.
The decisive goal came on 79 minutes. Substitute Robbie Burns' first touch secured a corner and Lucas Kirkpatrick's ball from the right beat the onrushing attackers to find McNamara at the far post. The winger was in the right place to deflect the ball home from close range.
Hitchin were able to see out the remainder of the game and might even have snatched a fourth after good build up by Burns and Mason Spence saw a teasing ball just evade the onrushing Kirkpatrick.
Mark Burke described the result as a "massive win" and acknowledged that the second half performance had been about "winning ugly".  He was also pleased with Alasan Ann's driving runs and goal, "Alasan was very mobile and definitely on it and got rewarded with his goal. We said we were going to try and get him into the box a bit more."
Hitchin now have a local derby tomorrow (Monday) at home to Gary Roberts' Cambridge City, who had a day off with their game against Chippenham falling foul of the weather.
