Kings Lynn Town 1 Hitchin Town 0

Tuesday, March 22 2016

Hitchin Town returned from The Walks Stadium with nothing to show for their efforts. A debut goal from on-loan striker Jon Sands was the difference between the sides as the hosts absorbed Hitchin's second half efforts and struck on the break.

The Canaries went into the game with one team change from Saturday with Mason Spence appearing at full back in place of Kane Smith, who had come off in the game against Bideford.

The first half was an even contest as both sides pushed forward to boost their play off aspirations. Spence and Walster both tried to get forward while Ann also got forward in support.

Mulready was an early threat for the hosts, firing wide and then forcing Horlock into a save. At the other end, Street in the Linnets goal saved from a Burns freekick and from a low McNamara drive.

The hosts plans were disrupted just before the half hour when Castelan had to go off injured to be replaced by Gaughran.

Hitchin continued to press with Ann advancing and playing a 1-2 with Callum Donnelly. However the number 4's shot was just wide. Spence then got forward and sent in a shot that was deflected for a corner. However at the other end Zielonka and Mulready also had attempts on goal.

Just before half time, Kings Lynn had to make another enforced change as Smith, who had looked dangerous down the flank, had to be replaced by Bridges.

HALF TIME Kings Lynn Town 0 Hitchin Town 0

Hitchin made a half time switch with Will Wright replacing Robbie Burns allowing Spence to play in a more forward role. They had an early scare when Horlock had to save at the second attempt from Mulready.

At the other end though McNamara forced another save from Street while Callum Donnelly sent an effort over after build up by Wright and Spence.

Following a foul by Ann - for which he received a card for holding his opponent back - Gaughran just failed to get on the end of Clunan's free kick.

The decisive moment came on 70 minutes when Kings Lynn broke in numbers. Clunan played a ball forward to Sands who turned past his defenders and placed the ball past Horlock.

Hitchin threw on John Frendo alongside Brett Donnelly and pressed for the equaliser. However the quality of ball into the box was variable and did not give the strikers many clear cut chances.

Street saved low down from Frendo as the substitute ran in on goal and also thwarted Brett Donnelly twice - once taking the ball from his head and once saving at his feet.

But that was as close as the Canaries got and they now need to show they can bounce back quickly as they entertain Weymouth at Top Field on Friday afternoon.
