Hitchin Town 2 Kings Lynn Town 0

Monday, August 17 2015

Hitchin registered their first win of the season as they wrapped up an ultimately comfortable win against Kings Lynn.

Lucas Kirkpatrick for Matt Lench was the only change from Saturday’s team.

The visitors started at the livelier pace as play was focussed in the Hitchin half without testing Horlock. However the first clear chance came just short of the 10 minute mark when Hitchin broke and were awarded a penalty that the Linnets were clearly not happy about. Martin nodded the ball into the path of McNamara who beat the defence and went down when making contact with Street in the Kings Lynn goal. The referee pointed to the spot but did not punish Street further - there was a strong view from the terraces that the keeper had won the ball - and he had the last word. Rolfe hit the spot kick towards the bottom right corner but it was not the most powerful shot and Street got down to turn the ball round the post for a corner.

Clunan tried to bring Kings Lynn back into the game from a free kick just outside the Hitchin area after a Kirkpatrick foul. However his shot went just wide.

On 22 minutes Hitchin did open the scoring and it was McNamara again who did the damage. Two Linnets defenders was harried by Kirkpatrick and allowed McNamara to steal the ball, take it past them and slot his shot past Street.

Hitchin maintained the pressure and Street did well to gather a low Smith cross from the incoming Simon Martin while Pearson headed wide from a Donnelly free kick.

Although Mulready had a half chance for Kings Lynn – looping the ball over Horlock’s goal – Hitchin ended the first half in the ascendancy. They forced three corners in succession with Martin essaying a spectacular acrobatic shot at the final delivery but unfortunately failing to make proper contact. It would’ve been spectacular.

HALF TIME Hitchin 1 Kings Lynn 0

Hitchin made one switch for the second half with Robbie Burns coming on for Martin.

The opening phases of the half were scrappy, and while Horlock pulled off a good stop from Bridges, the other efforts at both ends were off target with Stevenson the worst offender. His free kick from a good position was blazed over the bar, over the fence and out of the ground.

Eventually Hitchin started to build up a head of steam as good approach play by Kirkpatrick and McNamara won a corner from which Webb's header was saved by Street. Substitute Ramm made a great tackle to deny McNamara but then brought down Ann – earning a yellow card – leading eventually to Hitchin’s second goal.

Webb chased after a free kick into the box and beat the keeper to the ball. The ball fell to Burns who fired a fierce angled shot into the opposite corner of the net on 74 minutes.

This seemed to knock the stuffing out of the visitors. While they looked for a consolation, Hitchin’s defence stood firm and got on the end of the crosses and through balls to the extent that Horlock was not tested with further meaningful shots.

Hitchin managed the end of the game well, although Burns earned a yellow card as he went down too easily following a clash with Street shortly before shooting wide after being set up by Man of The Match McNamara.

However it was a good team performance with some solid defending and some positive build up play, while the visitors were left to rue the lack of a cutting edge having drawn a blank for the third game in four.
