Weston Super Mare AFC 4 Hitchin Town 0

Sunday, November 29 2015

Hitchin’s ten game unbeaten record ended at Weston Super Mare. There can be no complaints at the result as Weston were a very good footballing side and their finishing was clinical. Hitchin had plenty of possession and played some good football but were not able to trouble Luke Purnell in the Weston goal. It was a good test for Hitchin’s young side and showed the level they would need to aspire to if promotion were to be achieved.

The only change from the Dorchester game was Kane Smith coming in at full back in place of Lewis Rolfe.

Conditions were awful with a gale force wind and driving rain making life difficult for both teams. Hitchin made the worst possible start when Weston scored from their first attack. It was a brilliant finish from Scott Wilson but he was allowed to make his run unchallenged.

1-0  down with just three minutes on the clock could have seen Hitchin lose confidence but they really came in to the game  with some neat passing. Matt Lench shot over the bar after good work by Smith and Jonny McNamara shot just wide as they offered a threat to Weston but it was the home side who doubled their lead after 24 minutes with another clinical goal. A good move ended with Joe McClennan giving Charlie Horlock no chance. Weston had scored two goals from just two chances.

Hitchin continued to play football but the cutting edge was lacking and Purnell was not troubled. Dan Webb had a header easily saved and half time saw Hitchin two down with a mountain to climb in the second half. The next goal was always going to prove critical and Weston got it with an unmarked header at the far post from Jake Mawford after a free kick on 64 minutes.

Lucas Kirkpatrick had replaced Brett Donnelly with Robbie Burns moving in to the central striker’s role but Hitchin could still not really trouble the Weston defence. McNamara shot weakly when he should have done better but the game was fully put to bed when Bradley Ash scored after a defensive error after 74 minutes.

Liam Brooks replace McNamara but there was not even a consolation goal to be had. Hitchin did not disgrace themselves but Weston looked a very confident side after a couple of good results and their passing and finishing was sharper than the Canaries. This result should not impact on league performances and Hitchin still have so much to play for and the team are capable of maintaining their play off challenge.
