Chesham United 2 Hitchin Town 0

Tuesday, November 22 2016

It had to end sometime and Hitchin’s 13 game unbeaten run was ended at Chesham. Mark Burke had no complaints as he thought the best team won but Hitchin did press hard in the second half without really threatening to score. Ultimately they were undone by two unopposed headers from left wing crosses in the 22nd and 49th minutes.

Chesham had suffered a minor blip since exiting the F A Cup at Peterborough but like Kettering they have a number of experienced players and have the capability of challenging for a play off place. With a front line of Drew Roberts, Barry Hayles and Ryan Blake  they will always be dangerous while Darren Purse and Mat Mitchel-King have played hundreds of games between them and are among the most experienced defenders in the league.

Hitchin made one change from the Kettering game bringing in Matt Lench at the expense of Kane Smith who dropped to the bench. Luton loanee Liam Gooch was again in goal. Hitchin were playing up the slope in the first half and Callum Donnelly and Robbie Burns had shots easily saved. Chesham looked dangerous and Dave Pearce produced a good cross that Sam Youngs headed in to the net. Chesham applied good pressure and Hitchin were happy to go in at half time just one goal down.

Chesham keeper Ashlee Jones seemed hesitant and fumbled one Ben Walster free kick but Hitchin did not exert enough pressure on him. When Blake headed home just after the break it seemed Hitchin had a mountain to climb to get back in the game. But they began to have the majority of the possession but unfortunately there was no cutting edge. Smith came on for Lench and then later Sam Barker replaced Josh Bickerstaff but Hitchin did not really trouble Jones.

Various headers were the closest Hitchin came to scoring with Bickerstaff and Will Wright both  heading wide from free kicks while Robbie Burns could not get any power in to his header. Chesham seemed content to sit back on their two goal lead although Roberts shot wide when he should have done better, quite a surprise considering his excellent record against Hitchin.

Liam Brooks came on for Callum Donnelly but in reality Hitchin were not destined to score and it is now up to the team to go on another unbeaten run. Hitchin were not at their best but it is no disgrace to lose to Chesham. But the players were not happy with this defeat and are determined to get back on track. There are two important games coming up with the F A Trophy trip to Burgess Hill followed by the home league game with Hayes and Yeading so the opportunity is there to return to winning ways.
