Hayes & Yeading United 2 Hitchin Town 0

Tuesday, August 9 2016

After the exciting comeback on Saturday it was back to earth with a bump for Hitchin as they fell to a limp defeat at Hayes and Yeading. Mark Burke was frustrated and said the performance was woefully short of the level required if we are going to be involved at the top of the table.

From Saturday Sam Barker and Ben Walster returned in place of Charlie Payne and Liam Brooks. As expected Hayes and Yeading were really up for this game as it was the first competitive match at the revamped Skyex Community Stadium. In  truth the ground resembled a building site as much work is still required to be completed. The main stand was impressive and the pitch was fine but the rest of the infrastructure was very poor. However from the first whistle it was obvious Hayes and Yeading wanted to mark their homecoming with a bang and they closed Hitchin down very quickly and gave the Canaries no time on the ball. This high tempo start meant Hitchin took a while to settle and Matt Lench had a shot blocked after 22 minutes which was the first time Hitchin threatened.

Centre forward Lloyd Macklin was impressive throughout and had already caused problems before he put Hayes and Yeading ahead after 29 minutes. It was a fine solo goal as he left three Hitchin players in his wake before shooting home. Hitchin put in no less than 18 crosses in the first half but only two led to shots on goal. The final pass was just not being accurately executed and keeper Louis Wells was untroubled before half time.

Adam Parker was sent to the stand after an incident with a Hayes and Yeading player just before half time and the half finished with Zak Barrett making an excellent save from Macklin. Barker was injured and did not come out for the second half and Hitchin brought on Stuart Pearson with Lewis Rolfe moving in to midfield. But a second goal for the home team came after 56 minutes. Again Macklin played a big part in the build up and crossed for Jack Mills to fire home. Josh Coley came on for Mason Spence and Rolfe moved back to defence as Hitchin changed personnel to try and get back in the game.

Walster shot over the bar and Pearson came close with a header from a corner but it was one of those nights where a goal never appeared likely to come. The passing remained below par and the midfield was not firing as usual. Even the dead ball kicks were wasted with corners and free kicks not causing problems for the defence. Robbie Burns, Coley and Lench had efforts but in truth the game was already won. There was time for Melford Simpson to be sent off for kicking a Hitchin player but Hitchin will want to quickly move on from this display. It is still early in the season and improvement will surely come in the following weeks.
