Hitchin Town Ladies FC had their last game of 2018 for which has been a truly remarkable year.
Today’s opposition was Welwyn Pegasus Azures.
Welwyn got us underway but it was Hitchin who were on top within the first 15 seconds, forcing a corner. The corner was sent in by Huffer and was palmed away by the keeper. Hitchin were back on top within the first 2 minutes setting up camp within the Welwyn half. Hitchin were on the attack with Chaffey firing a shot into the keeper, but no one was there to follow up. Hitchin then forced Welwyn to concede a succession of corners with one from Huffer palmed out for another corner. Another Huffer corner was glanced just over the bar.
GOAL Hitchin! Gash takes a quick throw to Smith who hits the ball on the half volley from 20 yards and sends it over the keeper! 1-0 Hitchin. GOAL Hitchin! Chaffey has a cheeky flick on the edge of the box feeds it into Gash who elevated it over the keeper! 2-0 Hitchin. Piper sends herself on a darting run from centre back to striker but the keeper gets low to smother the ball. Hitchin are attacking Welwyn from all different angles.
GOAL Welwyn! A 25 yard strike sends it over the back-pedalling Thompson. Hitchin responds well but GOAL Hitchin! Huffer whips in another corner to find Cain-Murnane’s head who flicks it to Gash who smashes it into the net. 3-1 Hitchin!
GOAL Hitchin! A ball sent to Wilfort from Cain-Murnane finds Watson who squares it to Gash who rounds off a perfect hat trick!
HALF TIME
Within seconds Hitchin win a penalty when Gash is bundled to the floor. Chaffey steps up but hits the crossbar! She heads it in but as it didn’t hit another player the goal is ruled out. Chaffey is leading the team by example. Defending and attacking and stepping up to the role as captain.
Gash hits the cross bar and then. Chaffey finds the keeper. This should be a cricket score! Gash sends a ball in and finds Smith but a mishit sends the ball bouncing wide. Huffer sends a cross into the back post but it’s just over everyone’s head! Hitchin are gaining momentum and are knocking at the door! Welwyn had responded well to the Hitchin changes and started to press Hitchin. The pitch become muddier and the grass disappeared with the pitch markings!
GOAL Hitchin! WithFranklin & Smith linking up on the right. Franklin sent a lovely weighted ball to Thompson who finds the back of the net! 5-1 Hitchin.
The final whistle blew and Hitchin Town Ladies remain top of the table boosting their lead to 9 points clear. Credit to Welwyn who no matter what was thrown at them as a team continues to play a decent football. Such good hosts and a nice football team!
