Forgotten Friendlies: 1928/29

Cambridge Town 3 Hitchin 2 (30th August 1928) Cambridge defeated the re-formed Hitchin Town club by the odd goal of five at Milton Road yesterday (Thursday) evening. Cambridge were inclined to treat their opponents too lightly in the first half with the result that they found themselves two goals do...

Re: Hitchin's Cup Finals

Just one week after winning the A.F.A. Senior Cup, Hitchin Town FC won the Hertfordshire Senior Cup, a 5-1 win against Apsley at Clarence Park, St Albans. The Biggleswade Chronicle of Friday 27th May 1932 reported: HITCHIN F.C. CELEBRATIONS "The Romance of Hitchin". This was how Mr Tom Woo...

Re: Hitchin's Cup Finals

On 7th May 1932, 91 years ago today, Hitchin Town FC won their fourth cup final, and perhaps their only national trophy (?), when they beat Derbyshire Amateurs 6-0 in the replay of the Amateur Football Alliance Senior Cup at Dulwich Hamlet. They had drawn the first match 2-2, also at Dulwich Hamlet....

Re: Financial fair play

Once the filthy lucre appears, fickle football fans forget the (often deadly) foibles of their benefactors; and they fail to consider what will happen when the cash cow inevitably moves on to fresh pastures. It will never change, notwithstanding FFP rules which have not scraped the surface of the pr...

Gordon Lightfoot: Goalkeeper

The death of the Canadian folk singer on Monday reminded me of his namesake, Hitchin Town FC's Gordon Lightfoot. Our Gordon Lightfoot was described in the local press as 'a loyal and popular player for 5 seasons' 23 Aug 1947 to 29 Sep 1951 before he left for pastures new. His debut against Hayes res...

Committees

From the Beds and Herts Pictorial of 1st May 1923, a century ago. COMMITTEES As soon as the football season ends the committee season will begin. The members of successful clubs will be slapping their committee men on the back and saying, "What's yours, old man?", and the members of losing...

Well Done Barton and Stotfold!

Super to notice that our local teams both won their games in the Step 4 / Step 5 inter-step play-offs; Barton to remain at Step 4 and Stotfold rising to that level.
Double delight for Barton's Jermaine Hall, as St Josephs (Luton) won the FA Sunday Cup Final the following day.

Cooper's Field to Top Field

A large square field off the Bedford Road is prominent on old maps of Hitchin. In April 1835, Mr Cooper, landlord of the Cricketers' Inn, converted the large field opposite his house into a 'most excellent cricket ground' (1). As the Inn was already called 'The Cricketers' perhaps the field had expe...

Phil Chamberlain: Pivotal Centre-Half

20th April 1932 marked the first team debut of Phil Chamberlain, who would go on to be the popular captain and centre half of Hitchin Town FC, and a cup-winning county player for Hertfordshire. Patiently waiting for the regular centre-half Rom Furr to move on, he would play the odd game at back unti...
